That is an excuse and a recipe to be poor forever. Being on disability with a limited income is even more reason to save money and not run up credit card bills for pizza. Instead of $50 a month at the pizza place and pub, he could save that money and buy a lawnmower to start a landscaping business, he could buy seeds to grow and sell the plants, he could manufacture weed and shrooms and sell them, he could find good deals on craigslist and flip whatever he buys. He could get a side job to get money under the table. Something like answering phones for a Mom n' Pop business, babysitting, or whatever there is near him, or he could keep making excuses and worry about pizza money forever.

If the housing market is about to crash then this would be the best time to save for it. He should be flipping his money and then when the crash happens he could buy a trailer or materials to build a shipping container house or maybe a cabin.

Buying on credit will get you nowhere and it will get you there really really fast.

Flipping his money. Yeah right.

I'm not sure what that means? Do you think he personally can't do it? Or do you think that it's not possible for anyone to flip their money? I mean right off the top of my head I listed like 5 good ways to easily make some extra pizza money. Why say "Yeah Right"?

Mainly that he has a negligible amount of money to spare to begin with. Certainly  it is possible for people to flip their money. Works better if you are not starting from pocket change and dryer lint though. Extra pizza money is one thing but a house is out of reach without dramatically higher income.

Well, you gotta start somewhere, of course it's easier if someone hands you a stack of cash, but that isn't happening here.

Not buying pizza on credit is the start. Saving that money and future earnings while cutting back on everything possible is what really gets the ball rolling. Then he can find a way for extra income. For example he can ask a small company if they can route phone calls to him and pay him per phone call or maybe baby-sitting for like $50 a week. In a couple weeks he could get a barrel smoker for free or almost free on craigslist and start smoking ribs and brisket for neighbors and friends while still taking calls.

From there you just keep making good decisions and saving money and eventually you have enough for a house or travelling or just financial security.

When I was 17 I lost everything I had. I did ok and then made bad decisions and when I was almost 19 I lost it and had less than $200. I spent some money on ecstasy and partying then started with basically nothing but clothes and a place to stay for a couple weeks. I got a job at K-mart for $5.20 and saved everything I could, then I got better jobs and learned skills and kept cutting back and saving. I never thought it could happen to me, but now I own a house and have my own business and I get paid $500 to play Nintendo in the morning!

A house is only out of reach if you have the attitude that the house is out of reach and that is the truth. It just takes time and some hard work.

Typical path for people with disabilities
is to end up in government housing, particularly towards the end of life

my mother works in one such care home -- it's basically like a small mansion sized house with multiple suites in it
people whose disability is not totally crippling are classed as "independents" and get a space with a small kitchen and personal bathroom and stuff
people in need of support have a small room with a bed, then a common kitchen and living room where workers make meals and care for them

disability payments provide money based on the individual's rent and then a standard food credit
they also check the individual's finances once a year (in higher income cases once every few months) and take away excess cash
so any saving would have to be done in a mattress rather than a bank, but that is just an aside

but yeah, anything like housing or more than one vehicle is also similiarly garnished out of payments themselves
so in order for someone on disability to really have ownership over thangs they need to get out of the disability program

this also applies to things like inheritances and the like
with some of the people on disability being so clouded in their comprehension of money
that they don't even realize the government is taking it from them

similiarly, if gopher and his girlfriend were to rent an appartment together
both of them would have their monthly disability income cut
in order to reflect the shared housing payments

I've never been to a casino. A strip club either. They both sound like not my kinds of scenes.

I've only been one other time (where I actually gambled), and that was a 4 day stay at a casino in Detroit (yes Detroit) when I was in town for a University of Michigan football game up the road in Ann Arbor.

I could maybe go a couple times a year, but could take it or leave it. Honestly I should just leave it and never go again. I donated some $500 in gambling alone (I'm guessing) when I was in Detroit. And then gave the casino another $125 yesterday.

So basically yesterday I paid $275 (the room, food/tips and alcohol) so I could have the privilege of giving the casino 125 bucks. So 400 altogether in 1 day.

Man they charged like upwards of $10 a beer at the casino yesterday. And I probably had like 7. I wonder if I could sneak beer in next time? There's a fridge in the room and they were selling bottles at different bars around the casino so if I was walking around with a bottle of some generic beer like bud light I don't know how they'd know.

You paid for drinks in a casino

I just wait for the watered down cocktails to make an appearance on the floors unless I really really want something specific.

just to come back to this and poke you as this comment reminded me of the crabby granny drinky winky gambling method

have not personally been to any casino for gambling nor drinking
but months ago, when game companies decided to be really brazen with gambling in gaming,
watched a video about gambling, and Jim Sterling provided an interesting insight into how he attends casinos
spending on cheapies for free booze and getting more in booze than he pays into his gambling

a whole ton of this is criticism of capitalistic practices in the modern gaming industry
but around the 14 minute mark he talks about his "wet weekend" 60 dollar gambling trip

it was an interesting look into how self-control can play into making the casino work for you

Somehow "I'm feeling like getting pizza with my gf tomorrow, gonna put it on the credit card. Coasting on my disability checks so things are a bit tough right now" lead to "your girlfriend is going to leave you if you do not start doing money schemes such as buying a shipping container and turning it into a mini-house".

Most bizarre advice I've ever seen lol

Better jobs? Ya don't say. Kind of like I was saying in the first place, that for a house he would need to not just save but increase his income. Which if you think about it is what you have also been saying since then, that he would in fact need to increase his income to get there.

Don't you guys ever want to get your own house or own your own business? Or just not have to worry about how you will pay for date night? It's as easy as saving your money and not spending money that you don't have.

No, it also requires sufficient income. He is on disability and has a few hundred bucks left after rent for food and anything else. There is no saving for a house on that kind of money. Even without the runaway housing prices happening now in Canada. The 2008 housing crash never really happened here and we are in the middle of a bubble.

But remember that I did not say it was out of reach period, just that it requires dramatically higher income.

This for example might be a more productive avenue than trying to "flip" disability pennies for someone like gopher who is tech oriented.

i thought asians were supposed to be some of the least degenerate people in general. never met an asian that would toke with me. oh well. i started practicing BJJ last night, we practiced submissions and escapes for an hour then we rolled for an hour. both of my arms are bruised all the way up and i got choked out enough times that i woke up with my voice cracking this morning. fun shit though. there was a girl in the class and they put me with her 1st because i was new i guess. she couldnt break my grip on her and i started laughing and she got this panicked look on her face for a second. it must suck to be the fairer sex sometimes
