Scouting for spots in Central Ohio
    #26437487 - 01/16/20 08:42 PM (4 years, 12 days ago)

Brand new to looking for actives. I have a little experience hunting and ID'ing culinary species, and I want to try my hand at actives.

Doing some research on my area, the big ones I want to be on the lookout for are ovoids and Gymnopilus.

I know they both grow from wood, and that the ovoids tend to come out sooner. I think I want to start my search with ovoids.  Looking at the 2019 ovoid thread, there were a couple of people around Columbus who didn't have much luck. But, I've seen reports of people finding them in the area.

Even though I'm still months away from them fruiting, I want to get an idea of places to be prepared to look. It looks like prime spots are flood plains near creeks and rivers (especially near box elder), but also human-caused mulch piles.

How does one scout out these specific spots? I can find mulch piles easily enough, but are there specific traits in certain mulch piles that make them more promising?

With flood plains, I think I know of a few, but they're also in busier area (one huge one is right downtown). Should I focus my search more on rivers or creeks?  Should I be looking in state parks / forests? How does someone easily access (park, not get cop attention, not trespass) rivers that aren't public parks? Navigable rivers are public property in Ohio, but what about their banks?

Any other tips would be awesome! Not looking for anyone to give away their spots (as if that would happen lol), but I really would like to find my own patch.

Look through the old ovoid threads for advice and habitat pics. I've got no experience with Ohio, but I'd imagine there are ovoid habitats in public parks/nature preserves. I'd imagine most are secluded enough to harvest discreetly.

Ovoids have been found around Columbus Ohio but they seem to be incredibly rare.  I have looked extensively in central Ohio for two years now and have yet to find any.

After striking out repeatedly looking every single day in season around central Ohio, I decided to take a day trip down to south east ohio and hunt streams/creeks that feed into the Ohio river.  I had success finiding ovoids within 15 minutes my first hunt down there.

I encourage you to look in Central Ohio as they are out there, but you are much, much more likely to have success as you get closer to the Ohio river.

I am trying to introduce more Ovoids around the central ohio area in spots like I found them in SE Ohio.  Its a small project, but maybe in a few years they will take hold and grow and start to spread naturally around the area.

Good luck!

You're actually the person I was reading the posts from on last year's ovoid thread. Really bummed that you weren't able to find them up here. Looks like you hunted the exact same spots I was thinking of.

I'll still give it a go, but might end up just making a trip to Wayne this spring.

Also, did you try north of cbus on the Scioto? There's a pretty large flood plain up by Galena. Even more separated from the Ohio River, but it might be worth a shot.

Never did much time on the scioto river.  I looked around near griggs resevoir but never found what seemed like good habitat.  Last year I focused on Alum Creek mostly and some big darby creek, two years ago I did the Olentangy.  I think all three of those rivers have spots that would support ovoid, they just don't exist there, yet?  Seems like the ovoid range is spreading.

In 2016 or so someone was putting Columbus Ohio ovoid finds on Mushroom Observer.  I remember seeing finder post that a bad flood washed away his spot and he hasn't posted about finding anymore since.  I don't know the general area he found them at.

2nd hand rumor reports i've heard, take it for whats its worth, is they have been found near Dawes Arboretum maybe 10 years ago and someone has said they where found in an olentangy flood plain I am not sure how long ago.

Hunting for ovoids in landscape mulch might not be a bad idea.  I never really tried to find Gyms or stumbled onto them.
