Central Ohio shrooms, possibly Cubensis? Help ID please!
    #5961636 - 08/14/06 02:38 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

These are dried, I forgot where exactly I picked them. They look like cubensis because they have darker tops that fade out, plus the young ones had closed caps. Theres a picture too so you can see the stem/ gills. Please help ID if this is enough info for it. Also, I dont know about its bruising at all because I picked them in sections, so they werent broke. Had them for a while so they're dry.

While it is impossible to positively id dried specimens, I will say that those are not cubes.
Location is wrong and the stem is too brown. In cubes the stem will be whiter and a dark ring should be visible, which yours do not display.
Also, the gills look to be free, but then, they are dry so it is impossible to get a positive id.

Hope that helps, and welcome to the shroomery

....not to sounds like a jerk, but I thought most young mushrooms had closed caps. Thats not really something which you can attribute to only P. cubensis.

Yes, but these ones strongly resembled cubensis

As do a lot of other mushrooms. The ones in your pic, even though dry and impossible to ID well....are not cubensis.

As Louise said, cubes don't grow in Ohio. You might want to learn about and search for: pan subbs, Gymnopilus, and P. caerulipes.

As for those dried specimens, a wild guess would be Agaricus. Dried IDs are impossible for the most part though.
Might as well discard them and start over with some fresh specimens next time.

Just in case you want another opinion, Psilocybe cubensis does not grow in Ohio.
