You may have killed live contams but not necessarily neutralised toxins. Toxins in substrate are said not to be taken up by the fruiting bodies, so I would be confident growing on fractionally sterilized grains, and have done so many times. I do NOT follow the flawed methods shown in most textbooks, this 30min stuff is nonsense, the same textbooks will say stuff is sterilized in 3-5mins at 15psi but this should not be taken as a guide for cooking huge jars of grain with airspace.

It is well accepted/known that leftover/reheated rice is especially prone to cause food poisoning.

Quote:
Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can cause food poisoning. The spores can survive when rice is cooked. If rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores can grow into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacillus_cereus#Pathogenesis

Quote:
Bacterial growth results in production of enterotoxins, one of which is highly resistant to heat and acids (pH levels between 2 and 11);[18] ingestion leads to two types of illness: diarrheal and emetic (vomiting) syndrome.[19]

The diarrheal type is associated with a wide range of foods, has an 8.0- to 16-hour incubation time, and is associated with diarrhea and gastrointestinal pain. Also known as the 'long-incubation' form of B. cereus food poisoning, it might be difficult to differentiate from poisoning caused by Clostridium perfringens.[18] Enterotoxin can be inactivated after heating at 56 °C (133 °F) for 5 minutes, but whether its presence in food causes the symptom is unclear, since it degrades in stomach enzymes; its subsequent production by surviving B. cereus spores within the small intestine may be the cause of illness.[20]

The 'emetic' form is commonly caused by rice cooked for a time and temperature insufficient to kill any spores present, then improperly refrigerated. It can produce a toxin, cereulide, which is not inactivated by later reheating. This form leads to nausea and vomiting 1–5 hours after consumption. Distinguishing from other short-term bacterial foodborne intoxications such as by Staphylococcus aureus can be difficult.[18] Emetic toxin can withstand 121 °C (250 °F) for 90 minutes.

The instructions in the pdf are saying to steam for just 30mins, and the final steam gets 60mins. If using large jars that initial 30mins may not be enough to get the core to 100C.

They're probably not flawed but you need to understand the context. There's definitely a big difference between surface sterilizing a scalpel and a sterilizing a jar of grain but the text may not make that clear because most likely it's a text about surface sterilizing lab tools in an autoclave.

This is important stuff, thanks for bringing it up. I think that to be cautious, the fractional sterilization section may need to be removed in the next edition of the tek. All the criticism is greatly appreciated.

I’ve started taking Lion’s Mane/psilocybin/niacin by adding ground myceliated rice to my breakfast smoothie.

I blended carrots, beets, blueberries, bananas, kale, dried figs, yogourt and oat milk with 1 teaspoon (3g) of ground semperviva rice and 1 tablespoon (10g) ground Lion’s Mane rice. Each full blender is three servings, so each day I consume roughly 1g psilocybe rice and 3g Lion’s Mane rice. I take two 100mg tablets of niacin (aka nicotinic acid or vitamin B3). The flush is pretty intense at first but after awhile it feels very good, creating a warm relaxing feeling through the body.

Two hours in and the effect is quite pronounced. I feel very clear, focused, attentive and motivated. The temptation to procrastinate is greatly diminished. So far so good!

It’s worth noting that Paul Stamets’ Host Defense Lion’s Mane products are also 100% mycelium on brown rice:

some were saying this was not as good, and just a cheap way to make it. I saw aloha medicinal also grow on grains for extracts, think it was mainly sorghum

you can see a Stamets patent here, note the 4-20weeks bit
https://patents.google.com/patent/US20180243356A1/

Quote:
Mycelial extracts can be made in many ways. One preferred method for making the mycelial extract is to grow mycelium on a mixture containing equal volumes of sterilized or fermented grain (barley, flaxseed, rice, oats, millet, wheat, rye, corn, seeds, including nuts, sawdust or wood chips (Douglas fir, pines, oaks, birches, alders, aspens, cottonwoods, olives, Prunus trees)), that has been incubated for more than 4 weeks but less than 20 weeks, and then immerse this myceliated mass into a an equal volume of a 50:50 water-ethanol solution, adding the ethanol first. Allow to sit at room temperature for two weeks, and then drain the liquid and press to expel the liquid extract contained within the mycomass. Over several days, a precipitate will fall out of the hydroethanolic solution. The hydroethanolic supernatant is drawn off above the pasty precipitate. After several more weeks, or by using a centrifuge, the precipitate further concentrates into a semisolid state.

I have some caerulescens and pseudoaztecorum that's due on the 27th.

Semperviva won't be ready until Jan.

:takingnotes:

I too am also largely skeptical of Paul especially because he has a lot to profit in making certain claims, however I have seen research that leads me to believe that he is correct in the idea that lions mane mycelium is more beneficial than the fruiting body As it contains higher concentrations of the medicinally beneficial compounds. however this research should not be applied to all species of mushrooms as each is different and needs to be tested individually. And knowing that I would still think something that was a dual extract mix of fruit body and mycelium is probably better than a straight myc extract.

Nice to see folks trying this TEK out. I just want to point out that I recently consumed 8 tbsp of Ps. caerulescens mycelium on dehydrated rice, which I brewed in tea. Unfortunately the effect was quite weak, nowhere near the potency of Ps. semperviva, which works very well. A friend originally recommended Ps. caerulescens for this process, and found it to be sufficiently potent. I and another close friend have both found this not to be the case, as least based on our individual experiences. I’m not writing it off yet, but I thought I should let you all know that as of now, Ps. semperviva is the only species known with certainty to be potently active on grain. By far the best grain to use is whole oats or whole barley (with husks) simmered in water for 15-20 minutes and strained. Rice is also effective, but not for making tea, as the grain quickly gets very mushy when simmered. Rice is best ground up and used for mkcrodosing, as with Lion’s Mane.

What do you figure a prop dose for caers would be, Don? 16 tbsp?

I got enough of this stuff to choke a horse.

Good to hear (in my case) don, thanks for the report. Semperviva rips through rye but I have 40 lbs of oats I've kinda written off cause I don't like working with them. Might try a g2g on oats.

8 tbsp was about the potency of 1.5g cubensis max. 8 tbsp is approx. 120 ml, so you’d need close to 2 cups to make a 5g trip. Not really feasible, though I haven’t tried brewing caerulescens oats in tea yet, that may work better.

I forgot to report in. I chucked my semperviva, caerulescens and zap and started those over.
I just didn't like the way they were growing out.

I had a pseudoaztecorum bag that I let ride for two months and that worked out well.

Pretty nice trip from 5 tbsp. Like level 2-3. Not much open eye, but closed eye it was pretty nice. Like
a 3-dimensional dreamscape. Come up was really smooth. No anxiety or nausea at all.

15 qts or so Semperviva going for grain tea.

Had 6 qts from early November I spawned but they crapped out before any fruits. Super fast colonizer - slow fruiter.

If youre growing mycelial mass why not make a big ass LC with a clean agar wedge and strain out the mycelium once the LC is fully colonized? This way you end product isnt mostly grain?
