What if it were the US annexing part of Mexico?  All other things equal just substitute baja for crimea and the U.S. for Russia?  Totally fine?

I largely agree with falcon--Crimea is mostly happy to be part of Russia.

However, I do not believe that Crimea had the right to vote to leave Ukraine.

You don’t have a vote to rejoin Russia with russian mercenaries patrolling the streets. That’s not a legitimate vote

You're all ignoring the fact that there was an unconstitutional coup before the vote to leave.

Put another way, if Putin backed a coup of a US President for a more Russia friendly President, we could obviously agree that's unconstitutional, right?  Then if a state like Florida then said "WTF I'm outta here", would the Russia friendly president have the right to say "you can't leave, because you have to follow the same constitution I just ignored"?

It was a coerced vote. Coerced by the implication of violence.

Source, or make believe?  If there's anything I know about you, it's that you make believe things you can never prove when asked.

Legal, constitutional, etc.
These are irrelevant to my point, just like your arguments about international law and the UN.

Plenty of things are illegal.  That doesn't make them immoral.  My whole point to begin with was that self determination doesn't happen by vote.  Maybe one day, but not today.  The Crimean vote for annexation would have meant exactly nothing without the military might of Russia to back it up, both in the open and (probably) clandestinely.

Fine, but that 'might' was directed against Ukraine, not Crimea.

I'll agree with that statement.

You're saying morality should trump the law, correct?

I'm saying that the law is irrelevant to whether a group of people are able break away from an existing Gov't or not.
The only real determining factor is that people's ability to affect that outcome.  What should or should not trump what else has little or no bearing on what happens in reality.

The world community has sanctioned Russia for illegally annexing crimea. Your biased opinion is rather irrelevant

So by that reasoning, you're now ok with Crimea being part of Russia?  Or am I misreading?

So no source that it was coerced?  Just that the 'world community' didn't like it?  Got it - make believe as always!

Reality doesn't give a shit whether I'm ok with it or not.  My position on the morality or lack thereof in annexing Crimea is irrelevant to the question of whether or not one can vote oneself into self-determination.

Trump on his criticism of leaving Syria; "it's not our problem".

I tend to agree. What a complete waste of life, resources, good will.

Go Turkey.

lol did he? That's almost hilarious.

That was the quote I heard on the morning news just now.

I can't stop thinking how absurd this conflict has turned.

If only Turkey had thrown a few more bombs over the border a few years ago??

What a waste of life.

Edit; funny for almost hilarious

Ok, so Crimea wouldn't have been able to vote itself out of Ukraine without Russian support.  That's fair.

Eastern Ukraine and the Kurds are in a similar situations.  Should the people seeking self determination in those areas be helped by the more powerful or not in your opinion?

I agree, and that takes us back to the UN.  Should there be rules in place, or should the strongest countries decide thingss?

The UN exists in order that the strongest countries decide things.

I don't disagree.

But the answer to my earlier question "Outside of Israel, who has acquired territory by force since 1945?" appears to be that no one has, after the Crimea clarification above.  We can possibly say it was defended by force, but not taken by force.

Edit:  I say this based on debunking the claim that Crimea had to follow the constitution after it was invalidated by the coup.
