Minimum amount of nutrients in LC
    #26142244 -

Before anyone say anything I'm not looking to be cheap, this is purely curiosity.
There is a max of nutrients you can add to an LC but is there a minimum?
Like if you half a recipe it'll probably still work depending on what you use? (Just much more shitty)
And if you half it again there basically not be enough for it to grow at all.
You need enough for the added mass of the mycelium so as soon as there's nothing and its used up all the nutrients for maintaining and growing it should die out.

So maybe if you time it correctly? ? ?

Don't know just wandering and if anyone got input please share.
( Again this is just a fun question. )
( One that may spark some ideas. )

Nutrient deficiency will probably cause faster mycelium expansion (to increase sourcing and search for more nutritious spaces) at the expense of mycelium strength (as the energy used for expansion can't be used for additional development). I suppose that's the logical conclusion.

I knew mushboy would not resist this this thread! ! !
Ye I have actually already read your write up

What did I tell you so so long ago? You probably don't remember:lol:

Any case it was actually that exact write up of yours that got me thinking about this

Again no one is going to do this, its more of a what is the limits of mycelium

So I've picked out 4 cultures that I'll test with
This is going to be a very long test
So:shrug: Coffee? ? Anyone?? ??

Make a few LC side by side. Keep upping the % of nutes and see what happens. I'd be interested in the results.

This is what I'm going to do
How ever I'll stop as soon as I see the mycelium survive long enough for the LC to be used
I've also got some sneaky shit up my sleeve

So after first test
Small update
You can make LC with no nutrient water

Will see to knock up jars some time next week, probably week end.

Workman (of sporeworks) recommended relatively low amounts.

Workman said:
2% Malt extract for agar and more dilute for broths, something between 0.5% and 0.1% works pretty good.

I thought this was very low but he confirmed it was 0.1-0.5% as you usually put smallest first I thought he had made a typo and meant 0.5-1.0%.

Using low amount means you do not have to really bother with a scale, going too high will mean no growth starts. As it is closer to being water I guess it might have a longer shelf life, as people will store myc in pure water for years. Less sediment too. Low amounts suit me as I sometimes microwave LC and do not have to worry much about moisture loss if it is very dilute.

I have used low amounts for a long time now and I think it makes it easier to suck the myc into syringes and to break up when shaking, the myc is probably growing outwards more readily in search of nutrients and so more web like, rather than a big ball sitting there getting thick & fat. I was worried low amounts would mean very little myc but it doesn't.

Look the just water LC did colonize and very well actually
I'm think its drawing nutrients from the agar? ?
I'll try and upload a photo if I can find someone with camera or something.
Its a bit difficult living here by me:lol:

OK so update
I knocked up 14 jars
7 NSS
7 KSSS
(I wanted to do 20 of each but. . .got fucked:shrug:)
Basically it seems like you can make LC with out adding nutrients to the water or making a "broth".
More experiments to come!
And if these turn out good, a tek . . .maybe. . .. . .I don't know:shrug:
