FH changes the game

Are you not very  proficient using a sab? You seem to have a lot of distaste for it. Not everyone  is here to grow pounds of shrooms. A SAB is more than good enough for the average hobbyists. I get great results  with it. OP does open air inoculations so a sab is a perfect step for him.

Thats great for you.

The question wasn't: what works? It was: what works best.

I used an SAB for years. No contest hood wins.

I love my flow hood but I’m glad I had the SAB as an option for getting started. I had neither the room or the need for a hood. Still don’t have the need but I do have the space now.

No doubt. I learned all my sterile tech in a sab, but I can fit more jars/bags
in front of my hood without worrying about clanking, easier setup, room scrubbing,
less cumbersome, and just a blast to work in front of vs. in a cramped box
hunched over just so you can see inside it. I got a bad back

Dude... It's not about a SAB being difficult. A hood is just so easy it feels like
you're cheating a little bit. Hate all you want, SABs have their place, but
given the choice and to answer OPs actual question, hoods are better in my opinion
as someone who has used all 3.

A flow hood would be ideal since it allows your shoulders to move freely.

You can't get that while working elbow deep in a glove box.

Another good reason a flow hood is better is the fire/explosion factor....I once managed to ignite the rubbing alcohol on both arms while flame sterilizing a syringe inside of a invented glovebox.....trust me, you never want to be the guy with two arms on fire trying to put each other out..

That's my two cents

Think OP has all the answers he needs by now  Love the discussion though!

Man! Who flame sterilizes INSIDE any closed box.. Basic physics says boom

Never had the luxury of a fh and as can be found in a lot of threads gloveboxes are a thing from the past when it comes to mushcult.

What I keep hearing is a fh makes life easier / even feels like cheating. If I had the room and money to spend I might go for one.

However, all that said I do feel the need to scream go for a (big ass) sab first! It forces you to think through what you are gonna need and the movements / space you're gonna need.
Point being: There's restrictions in a sab so you're forced to develop better sterile tek if you want good results. O yeah and it costs next to nothing

On top of that, also if you decide to go for a fh (which, again, is probably a great choive) you're probably still at least a month away from finishing, testing or using it. In the mean time you're going to need a sab OR be out of culting for the entire duration of your fh build..

How about having both a sab and a hood? Whether you like it or not, being proficient with a sab is a game changer. I’d never open a contaminated plate in front of a hood, you are blowing mold spores throughout the room. Isolating from a contam plate is something you should be doing in a sab. After you’ve gained the needed experience with a sab, switching to a hood for literally every other aspect besides contam cleanup is generally the next step. However, you shouldn’t toss your sab in case you want more cleanup. Both have their uses but flow hood is generally better and easier in every aspect besides cleanup, but a sab is a tool you can use for literally every aspect of the hobby, despite it being a bit more cumbersome. So in the end it’s up to you. If you don’t mind having a cumbersome but extremely versatile and mobile work space, sab all the way. If you want to push a lot of spawn with comfort and style, flow hood all the way.

Hardly anyone actually uses a "flow hood".

A tabletop horizontal laminar flow hepa filter is the way to go. You can keep it in your closet along with a small folding table when your not using it.

I do contam clean up in front of my hood

My "lab" is in a dinning room that is most certainly full of airborne contaminants already anyways, so what's the difference.

My plates are very rarely contaminated at this point, but even if they are it's minimal, and said contamination is oriented downwind from my chosen spot of transferable mycelium. If a plate was ever soo covered in mold or bacteria that it looked like it was mostly contamination, I'd just toss it.

I even scrape spore prints onto plates in front of the hood without many problems. I haven't used my SAB in forever. I learned sterile technique in front of my hood, so a SAB seems beyond cumbersome.

Have used a forced fan unit in a rotten, leaky, moldy, rodent infested, dusty shed with no contam issues, more than once... (not ideal conditions).

Become proficient with as many tools as you can. there is no cheating in art. Very few people even mention aseptic technique which is super old and works if done properly and only requires a decent bunson.

Hands down, a horizontal flow forced air hepa (99.999 not 99.997) filter is the winner.

Hoods suck for most stuff other than delicate circuit board work.

:justno: cringed a bit there. It’s your health and your grow room, but I’d never open contams in front of a hood, and this is coming from a long time advocate of clean spawn is all you need to grow in a contaminated environment. There’s more to this than the shrooms. Our health is also a big thing to consider, and opening unifentified molds while you’re directly down wind from them is a pretty stupid idea. :2cents:

I’ve seen many cases on this site alone where people ended up in the hospital with pneumonia from contams with mycotoxins. It’s not pretty at all when it does happen. Majority of cases are generally due to this:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypersensitivity_pneumonitis (there’s even a specific one called mushroom workers lung)

Some species of fusarium will send you to the hospital regardless of how healthy you are. Don’t be another statistic, and be smart ffs.

My SAB is roomy enough that it's really no difference than the lack of restrictions i have with my hood. I only prefer the hood because it's not as hot with a gentle breeze coming towards you. And the better visibility than the SAB is an absolute plus.

You identify them first then, eh? Did you know my signature has a deadly toxic mold? It’s the white/brown mold the green snake is wrapped around (Scopulariopsis brevicaulis). To tell the difference between this and any other lookalikes you’d need to be able to do some decent microscopy, and I seriously doubt people do that for every mold they find in a plate (not to mention prove to be more cumbersome then just using a sab). So, why risk It when all you need is a tote with 2 arm holes? I mean if you don’t care and wanna keep doing contam work in front of a flow cabinet or what ever that’s your business, but I’m just trying to advise people not to underestimate contams.

I don't open plates covered in mold, as I mentioned earlier, I rarely have contamination worth mentioning. Contamination comes mostly in the form of bacteria, and even then it's nothing worth mentioning.

Anything that can be found on my plates can be found in my environment already. If you have dangerous levels of mold or bacteria on plates than something may be wrong.

Let's cut through the superfluous subjectivity of personal preference and ask something simple:

Can a SAB do everything a hood can do?
Can a hood do everything a SAB can do?

It would appear that a hood does everything a SAB can do and a bit more. Both can be used to great effect, but one can do more than the other.

Not all of them but most yes. Some of us actually have microscopes and use them. Also identification of sporulation is key anyway. If its making spores then extreme measures are taken or the dish is just tossed. As far as bacteria go there are very few that can become airborne and those are easily identified without a microscope by growth pattern and color usually staining the inside of the dish. Viruses need living cells to replicate so there is little worry there.

I clean up a lot of wild cultures and have been doing so for more than 20 years. Never have I gotten sick or made anyone else sick.

Funny how all these trusted cultivators preach such crap and then kiss each others asses about it like a petty bully troupe. Highschool shit. It really ruins the flow of conversation. Measuring contest for sure.
