People who have used all three which do you prefer and why? Sab, gb, fh?
    #26133911 -

I'm moving into a new place, I used to have a 3rd room in which I can do all my cultivation in. It was pretty easy to keep the room super clean so I would normally do my inoculation out in the open. I was doing really well, my contam rate was fairly low with maybe 1 out of every 15 jars or so. More and more recently my contam rate became increasingly worse. I stopped for a while and now with the move I'll have to do everything out of my room. With that being said I won't be able to have up the same precautions that I had in my spare room. Ie. plastic the walls and floors and regularly bleach the room. So now I'd like to switch to using a still air box, a glove box or a flow hood. I wanted to hear from someone who has used all three and has decided which one was best and why?

Umm. Flowhood. If you got the money and space flowhood is the way to go. SAB is great as well and you can accomplish most of the same things for a small fraction of the cost.

Glove boxes :wtfno:

Also, never use a glove box. Or a shmuvbox. Oh, and the flowhood makes everything significantly faster than using as SAB.

:horrified:

Man, I was team SAB until I got my flow hood. Bags man. BAGS! Screw the contam chances of bags in a SAB.

I guess honestly, it all comes down to how often you use this gear? I work in front of my flow hood 2-5 times a week. That was hellish in my SAB. If I worked on mycology 2-5 times a month (or less) I might feel less so about it.

Also, I'm trying to gear up to go legit, so FH or broke I guess

Eh it's really not that expensive to build your own. I got 2 filters for 180
(actually the company shipped 4 filters 2x2 but I sent back 2) and the lumber,
speed controller, and fan for like 100 bucks no joke. My hood cost me about
300 bucks to build, it's 2'x2' and has been kickin strong for over 2 years.

It payed for itself in medicinal reishi tinctures alone less than a year after
getting it.

Your average noob also doesnt have the space or skill sets to build a hood. They barely kno what sanitize means:lol:

That's all you agree with?

So, someone who's at the open air inoculation phase of the learning process should go dump a few hundred bucks so they can do bags?

I don't have to drive a sports car to know that most new drivers shouldn't need one.

Their question is which is better in the opinion of those who have used all 3.

As one who has used all 3, Fh is better and since you have never used one, you are talking out of
your ass, yes. To that I agree.

Does every noob need one? No; But that wasn't the question either.

Hood is good for more than just bags also but they are usually the main selling point round here

It should really come down to experience and volume. If you have zero experience then use a SAB as mushboy has pointed out. But if you have the experience and require  an increased volume of production,  then hoods are the way to go. You can only process so much spawn while using a box.

I have enough money for one so I use one, I hate using boxes, they're restrictive and clumsy as far as I'm concerned. It costs way too much money to source the parts in Canada,  everything worth buying comes from the states, so I purchased a flow hood from FP.

I wish we had the availability of goods that you Americans have, it would make things soo much easier.

Having said that, I started on a hood and see no reason why a SAB is worth using even if you are a noob. They may not be necessary,  however I find them (hoods) much more enjoyable to use.

OP has been here for 3 years so I am sure they know the basics.

Also volume is totally possible in a SAB. It's just easier with a hood. Lots of
great cultivators have been doing just fine in boxes, but like you said
they're clumsy and slow in terms of having to load, cumbersome movements, and all that biz

Yeah you can get decent volume for cubes, but good luck pumping out enough spawn for gourmets when you're supplying the local market/friends family. That's mostly what I was referring to when talking volume.

Are you not very  proficient using a sab? You seem to have a lot of distaste for it. Not everyone  is here to grow pounds of shrooms. A SAB is more than good enough for the average hobbyists. I get great results  with it. OP does open air inoculations so a sab is a perfect step for him.

Even if Iintended to grow one shoebox/month, I'd rather do it in front of a hood. By comparison a SAB feels like a prison on planet bullshit.

Soy sauce bottles are good enough, but I'd choose a media bottle for agar any day. So I suppose personal preference place a huge roll, I couldn't imagine someone preferring a SAB over a hood after experiencing both.....

No doubt. I learned all my sterile tech in a sab, but I can fit more jars/bags
in front of my hood without worrying about clanking, easier setup, room scrubbing,
less cumbersome, and just a blast to work in front of vs. in a cramped box
hunched over just so you can see inside it. I got a bad back

Dude... It's not about a SAB being difficult. A hood is just so easy it feels like
you're cheating a little bit. Hate all you want, SABs have their place, but
given the choice and to answer OPs actual question, hoods are better in my opinion
as someone who has used all 3.

A flow hood would be ideal since it allows your shoulders to move freely.

You can't get that while working elbow deep in a glove box.

Another good reason a flow hood is better is the fire/explosion factor....I once managed to ignite the rubbing alcohol on both arms while flame sterilizing a syringe inside of a invented glovebox.....trust me, you never want to be the guy with two arms on fire trying to put each other out..

That's my two cents

Think OP has all the answers he needs by now  Love the discussion though!

Man! Who flame sterilizes INSIDE any closed box.. Basic physics says boom

Never had the luxury of a fh and as can be found in a lot of threads gloveboxes are a thing from the past when it comes to mushcult.

What I keep hearing is a fh makes life easier / even feels like cheating. If I had the room and money to spend I might go for one.

However, all that said I do feel the need to scream go for a (big ass) sab first! It forces you to think through what you are gonna need and the movements / space you're gonna need.
Point being: There's restrictions in a sab so you're forced to develop better sterile tek if you want good results. O yeah and it costs next to nothing

On top of that, also if you decide to go for a fh (which, again, is probably a great choive) you're probably still at least a month away from finishing, testing or using it. In the mean time you're going to need a sab OR be out of culting for the entire duration of your fh build..

How about having both a sab and a hood? Whether you like it or not, being proficient with a sab is a game changer. I’d never open a contaminated plate in front of a hood, you are blowing mold spores throughout the room. Isolating from a contam plate is something you should be doing in a sab. After you’ve gained the needed experience with a sab, switching to a hood for literally every other aspect besides contam cleanup is generally the next step. However, you shouldn’t toss your sab in case you want more cleanup. Both have their uses but flow hood is generally better and easier in every aspect besides cleanup, but a sab is a tool you can use for literally every aspect of the hobby, despite it being a bit more cumbersome. So in the end it’s up to you. If you don’t mind having a cumbersome but extremely versatile and mobile work space, sab all the way. If you want to push a lot of spawn with comfort and style, flow hood all the way.

Hardly anyone actually uses a "flow hood".

A tabletop horizontal laminar flow hepa filter is the way to go. You can keep it in your closet along with a small folding table when your not using it.

My "lab" is in a dinning room that is most certainly full of airborne contaminants already anyways, so what's the difference.

My plates are very rarely contaminated at this point, but even if they are it's minimal, and said contamination is oriented downwind from my chosen spot of transferable mycelium. If a plate was ever soo covered in mold or bacteria that it looked like it was mostly contamination, I'd just toss it.

I even scrape spore prints onto plates in front of the hood without many problems. I haven't used my SAB in forever. I learned sterile technique in front of my hood, so a SAB seems beyond cumbersome.

Have used a forced fan unit in a rotten, leaky, moldy, rodent infested, dusty shed with no contam issues, more than once... (not ideal conditions).

Become proficient with as many tools as you can. there is no cheating in art. Very few people even mention aseptic technique which is super old and works if done properly and only requires a decent bunson.

Hands down, a horizontal flow forced air hepa (99.999 not 99.997) filter is the winner.

Hoods suck for most stuff other than delicate circuit board work.

:justno: cringed a bit there. It’s your health and your grow room, but I’d never open contams in front of a hood, and this is coming from a long time advocate of clean spawn is all you need to grow in a contaminated environment. There’s more to this than the shrooms. Our health is also a big thing to consider, and opening unifentified molds while you’re directly down wind from them is a pretty stupid idea. :2cents:

I’ve seen many cases on this site alone where people ended up in the hospital with pneumonia from contams with mycotoxins. It’s not pretty at all when it does happen. Majority of cases are generally due to this:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypersensitivity_pneumonitis (there’s even a specific one called mushroom workers lung)

Some species of fusarium will send you to the hospital regardless of how healthy you are. Don’t be another statistic, and be smart ffs.

My SAB is roomy enough that it's really no difference than the lack of restrictions i have with my hood. I only prefer the hood because it's not as hot with a gentle breeze coming towards you. And the better visibility than the SAB is an absolute plus.

You identify them first then, eh? Did you know my signature has a deadly toxic mold? It’s the white/brown mold the green snake is wrapped around (Scopulariopsis brevicaulis). To tell the difference between this and any other lookalikes you’d need to be able to do some decent microscopy, and I seriously doubt people do that for every mold they find in a plate (not to mention prove to be more cumbersome then just using a sab). So, why risk It when all you need is a tote with 2 arm holes? I mean if you don’t care and wanna keep doing contam work in front of a flow cabinet or what ever that’s your business, but I’m just trying to advise people not to underestimate contams.

I don't open plates covered in mold, as I mentioned earlier, I rarely have contamination worth mentioning. Contamination comes mostly in the form of bacteria, and even then it's nothing worth mentioning.

Anything that can be found on my plates can be found in my environment already. If you have dangerous levels of mold or bacteria on plates than something may be wrong.

Let's cut through the superfluous subjectivity of personal preference and ask something simple:

Can a SAB do everything a hood can do?
Can a hood do everything a SAB can do?

It would appear that a hood does everything a SAB can do and a bit more. Both can be used to great effect, but one can do more than the other.

Not all of them but most yes. Some of us actually have microscopes and use them. Also identification of sporulation is key anyway. If its making spores then extreme measures are taken or the dish is just tossed. As far as bacteria go there are very few that can become airborne and those are easily identified without a microscope by growth pattern and color usually staining the inside of the dish. Viruses need living cells to replicate so there is little worry there.

I clean up a lot of wild cultures and have been doing so for more than 20 years. Never have I gotten sick or made anyone else sick.

Funny how all these trusted cultivators preach such crap and then kiss each others asses about it like a petty bully troupe. Highschool shit. It really ruins the flow of conversation. Measuring contest for sure.

I’d argue majority of contams are rarely from environment until after spawning. Majority of contams IMO come from either the spore source, or we introduced it with our hands or something (which means it can easily come from outside your house). After initial cleanup you should have no more contams to deal with. :2cents:

Lmao what’s your problem? Cool beans you’ve been healthy. Not everyone can say the same. I’m exclusively talking about mold spores here. Didn’t mention bacteria or viruses, but glad others who read this can know that now (but yeah I was definitely not talking about those). Didn’t know it offended you so much to look out for others and advise to simply use a god damn tote with arm holes in it. If you don’t want to, cool stuff I ain’t stopping you.

Are you really saying that a SAB is necessary, honestly? Conversation is stimulating and all but is this honestly what's being stated? Considering that the SAB is an adaptation adopted for this hobby in lieu of proper lab equipment. Even this "hood" is an adaptation of a real flowhood. You will not find a tote with arm holes cut on the side,in a lab with Alan Rockefeller hunched over it.

Yes I am 100% stating this. If you want to do contam work it’s the much safer route. Sure, it’s annoying but it is also safer. It’s like basically arguing that you don’t need safety glasses when using a drill. Tons of people don’t use them and have had no problems, but there’s also many who ended up with shavings in their eyes. It’s more annoying but it’s also safer. For literally any other aspect FH is better. Tons of people in the past don’t care and use flow hoods for contam and spore work, just like tons of people operate drills without safety glasses. Power to them, but just like how wearing safety glasses is the proper tool for longevity when operating a drill, a sab is the proper tool for contam work.

This isn’t brand new shit. This is using the proper tool for the job.

Rule number 1 is NEVER open a contaminated petri dish in front of the flowhood, regardless of configuration.  You don't want those spores going everywhere.  If a dish is contaminated and you're trying to isolate healthy mycelium away from it, always shut off the hood just before you make the transfer, so you're working in still air, or use a glovebox instead.

You can, and I do so regularly as I transfer away from contams while doing wild clones. A glove box is better for this, because it's not blowing shit around. As long as the the contam hasn't spread more than a few mm's I proceed under the hood as normal and as always keep it fast, and cover the dish as soon as possible.
FT

You should never open a contaminated petri dish in front of a flow hood.  If I'm isolating away from molds or bacteria, I'll run the flow hood right up until just before I open the dish, and then shut it off, make the transfer and then turn it back on.  If you open a moldy dish in front of a flowhood, you'll just blow the contaminant spores all over your new dish and/or work, not to mention yourself and your lab.
RR

Or do as rr says and turn it off for the transfer, but fuck letting it blow spores everywhere, including yourself.

Alright, I concede.  It would appear as though there is place for it where the hood fails to perform. Even though I don't open mold infested plates.

Best to push an argument to its limits to find the cracks in it's armour.

Hey man, I’m glad you understand, and if you’re experienced, with a good set of cultures and clean spores, you’re set and never need a sab. I’m simply just stating for the thousands of new people who’ll stumble upon this thread in the future what is the proper tool, and to be wary of the unknown. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Also glad to see another Canadian

The shroomery is the place you go when you want to find hobby cultivators that need nicer stuff than people running businesses. There's real farms that support 5-50 people's incomes using off the shelf Walmart humidifiers and prestos. There's people here with $500 misting setups and three all American's. Either way results and whatever floats your boat is what matters to me

Dont get much contams on my plates but when there is a random colony, I save
that plate for last and transfer it right after turning off my hood. Has yet
to fail me in cleaning up a plate.

SAB work is good for teaching you the basics of sterile tech but I would choose
to work in front of a hood everytime given the option

Hmm. I do my myco stuff in the garrage. In flow. Is it really any more dangerous to open a dirty plate then to be in the room the plate got dirty in? I figure all that shit was in the air anyway. Like I could see a whole tubs worth of sporulating funk being an issue but one little spot on a plate? Not saying that I don't believe it. Just seems like a strech. That said I knew a dude with what they call bakers lung. It was from sifting pasty flour by the tons over the course of his baking career so now I'm thinking... Do I need to be using a respirator if I'm doing this shit all day every day?

I kept my SAB specifically for contaminated plates. I just wanted to put all these quotes together:

:whathesaid:
This is what I've done since I got my flow hood. When I first finished it I had a few very nasty plates that I wanted to save, and I tested this out. Ran the thing and did all my other transfers then shut it off and worked as fast as I could to finish all the contaminated plates, then closed them up and turned the FH back on. I've done it a couple times since then too, and I've had great success doing this and as a result haven't had to pull out my SAB.

I've made transfers away from sporulating mold in front of my filter before without dying or losing all my work...

I think the trick to pulling it off is to not be stupid about it and I wouldn't reccomend a noob do it.

Been hyming and hawing over getting a hood but feel it is more of a luxury item for reasons explained above.
I think the bottom line is that a cultivator doesn't have to use a sterolite tub for a SAB ether and still do bags or gallon jars.
Ya just gotta think outside the tub.  :douchewink:

So, it seems what I'm getting is invest in a flow hood? I've been looking online and finding for under $100 which I think is perfectly reasonable considering that you significantly decrease your contamination rate. The only thing I'm wondering now is why everyone is saying they're so expensive? Am I not looking at the right ones? Because for the cost of a few empty tubs I can cultivate much larger amounts with less hassle.

Why does no one ever mention getting just a plain HEPA filter without the flow?  Don't get me wrong, I know the point of a flow hood is that all air is moving in one straight current; but a standalone HEPA filter is really great too. And if you can afford a PC, you can def afford one of those.

takes contaminates out of the air... namely mold spores (common sense??)  It would be an awful big coincidence if I failed 80% of the time before I got one and 0 failures since I got one.

So you used to do open air inoculations and now you do them in front of your Honeywell? Or is that just to "scrub" the air in your grow room? Cause honestly buddy. That thing ain't doing shit except making noise and blowing air. For a min a believed that spore load had something to do with my failures. Then I decide to prep a few tubs of coir and no spawn. The shit never turned green it just dried out. Then if that wasn't enough to seal the deal I accidentally left a cooler with some left over coir in it on the back porch. My kid has been using it as a play box putting pool toys and his grubby little baby hands in it every day for over a month. No mold. No funky smell. Just wet coir in a cooler. Your culture has to be clean. Your jars have to be clean. After that... But if your suggesting folks can use a Sonic air or whatever as a flowhood they can't. It's not a thing. Might as well make a still air room.

Those home hepa air filters take the contaminants per cubic foot in your home's air down a little but not enough to matter for sterile work. If you have asthma it might help a bit.

For every 1 million particles that go into one of those air filters 300 leak thru. Which when it comes to sterile work is still just as bad as having a million to deal with

Understand.  But I like to have a number of barriers before you get to the jar.  HEPA filter - greenhouse enclosure - shoebox - lid.

I will let my results speak for themselves.  Will be posting many pics.

No... I would describe it as sitting at the 'suck' end of a vacuum.  Plus gravity, as you know, is the difference between a horizontal flow hood and a vertical one.  The vertical one has the advantage of the air falling off at the opening.  Spores, as light as they are, sink.

and btw, this is a little better, more expensive, and more effective than a Honeywell.

Laugh at me.  I will show many pics along the way.  and I LOVE THIS SITE, and all your help and posts!

If it cost more than a Honeywell you should have built a hood. My Honeywell was like 199 and my flowhood was 250-300 to build. Or a still air box works wonders at 15.

Probably right.  I thought the same thing, but quite accidentally fell into something that's been working.  0 contam cases.  Like I said, using a series of barriers now, and the greenhouse has some SAB features.

Are you really saying that a SAB is necessary, honestly? Conversation is stimulating and all but is this honestly what's being stated? You will not find a tote with arm holes cut on the side,in a lab with Alan Rockefeller hunched over it.

I’d argue majority of contams are rarely from environment until after spawning. Majority of contams IMO come from either the spore source, or we introduced it with our hands or something (which means it can easily come from outside your house). After initial cleanup you should have no more contams to deal with. :2cents:

Nichrome said:

No problem...
