People who have used all three which do you prefer and why? Sab, gb, fh?
    #26133911 - 08/13/19 02:40 PM (4 years, 7 months ago)

I'm moving into a new place, I used to have a 3rd room in which I can do all my cultivation in. It was pretty easy to keep the room super clean so I would normally do my inoculation out in the open. I was doing really well, my contam rate was fairly low with maybe 1 out of every 15 jars or so. More and more recently my contam rate became increasingly worse. I stopped for a while and now with the move I'll have to do everything out of my room. With that being said I won't be able to have up the same precautions that I had in my spare room. Ie. plastic the walls and floors and regularly bleach the room. So now I'd like to switch to using a still air box, a glove box or a flow hood. I wanted to hear from someone who has used all three and has decided which one was best and why?

Umm. Flowhood. If you got the money and space flowhood is the way to go. SAB is great as well and you can accomplish most of the same things for a small fraction of the cost.

Glove boxes :wtfno:

:whathesaid:

Also, never use a glove box. Or a shmuvbox. Oh, and the flowhood makes everything significantly faster than using as SAB.

:horrified:

Man, I was team SAB until I got my flow hood. Bags man. BAGS! Screw the contam chances of bags in a SAB.

I guess honestly, it all comes down to how often you use this gear? I work in front of my flow hood 2-5 times a week. That was hellish in my SAB. If I worked on mycology 2-5 times a month (or less) I might feel less so about it.

Also, I'm trying to gear up to go legit, so FH or broke I guess

Only people that don't pick FH have either never used one or are
being intellectually dishonest for the sake of argument and edge.

FH changes the game

Eh it's really not that expensive to build your own. I got 2 filters for 180
(actually the company shipped 4 filters 2x2 but I sent back 2) and the lumber,
speed controller, and fan for like 100 bucks no joke. My hood cost me about
300 bucks to build, it's 2'x2' and has been kickin strong for over 2 years.

It payed for itself in medicinal reishi tinctures alone less than a year after
getting it.

15 vs 300+ for the average cube growing dude/dudette?

Your average noob also doesnt have the space or skill sets to build a hood. They barely kno what sanitize means:lol:

But I've never used one so I'm just talking out my ass.

That's all you agree with?

So, someone who's at the open air inoculation phase of the learning process should go dump a few hundred bucks so they can do bags?

I don't have to drive a sports car to know that most new drivers shouldn't need one.

Their question is which is better in the opinion of those who have used all 3.

As one who has used all 3, Fh is better and since you have never used one, you are talking out of
your ass, yes. To that I agree.

Does every noob need one? No; But that wasn't the question either.

Hood is good for more than just bags also but they are usually the main selling point round here

It should really come down to experience and volume. If you have zero experience then use a SAB as mushboy has pointed out. But if you have the experience and require  an increased volume of production,  then hoods are the way to go. You can only process so much spawn while using a box.

I have enough money for one so I use one, I hate using boxes, they're restrictive and clumsy as far as I'm concerned. It costs way too much money to source the parts in Canada,  everything worth buying comes from the states, so I purchased a flow hood from FP.

I wish we had the availability of goods that you Americans have, it would make things soo much easier.

Having said that, I started on a hood and see no reason why a SAB is worth using even if you are a noob. They may not be necessary,  however I find them (hoods) much more enjoyable to use.

OP has been here for 3 years so I am sure they know the basics.

Also volume is totally possible in a SAB. It's just easier with a hood. Lots of
great cultivators have been doing just fine in boxes, but like you said
they're clumsy and slow in terms of having to load, cumbersome movements, and all that biz

Yeah you can get decent volume for cubes, but good luck pumping out enough spawn for gourmets when you're supplying the local market/friends family. That's mostly what I was referring to when talking volume.

Ah yes I agree 100% there. Actually gourmets and meds were my main motivation
for building my hood.

I've built and used all 3 and I personally like using a flow caninet the best becasue it gives me more freedom of movement and it reduces contaminationn for me. Hope that answers your question, OP. :super:

Using mine as we speak and noticed a side perk...

When I used a SAB I always had too much annoying condensation on my dish lids, regardless of temperature at pour. My hood takes care of that while my dishes cool, crystal clear every time

Are you not very  proficient using a sab? You seem to have a lot of distaste for it. Not everyone  is here to grow pounds of shrooms. A SAB is more than good enough for the average hobbyists. I get great results  with it. OP does open air inoculations so a sab is a perfect step for him.

Even if Iintended to grow one shoebox/month, I'd rather do it in front of a hood. By comparison a SAB feels like a prison on planet bullshit.

Soy sauce bottles are good enough, but I'd choose a media bottle for agar any day. So I suppose personal preference place a huge roll, I couldn't imagine someone preferring a SAB over a hood after experiencing both.....
It would appear to be intellectually dishonest
