I remember when I first got the Shpongle CD "Tales of the Inexpressible" I listened to it sober first, and I wasn't sure if I liked it.

But I followed through, and listened to it while tripping and it completely changed my world. Awesome, awesome stuff.

Now, even when sober, I can't get ENOUGH of it!! I love this music. Every time I listen to it, it's like I'm hearing it for the first time. I can't wait for their third album to come out.

Awesome.  Oh I know, my anticipation for shpongle 3 is enough for me to have a wet dream

The first album was fantastic.  The second album was equally fantastic, if not more.  So intricate and detailed(not that the first one wasn't either, but such a variety of instruments/sounds).  I'd have to say, shpongle is definately one of a kind.  Nothing like it.

hmm, is the difference really so drastic?
I already have high quality headphones, and if I have good mp3's, 192kbps or better, will I really notice the difference from audio cd's?

yes, there is a drastic difference.  I also thought a long while back, that it couldn't be that big of a difference.  But gauranteed, there is.

With cd quality, it is so much more intricate.  There are sounds that actually just don't make it on mp3 quality.  Do yourself a favour and buy at least one of the albums and enjoy the entire album while laying down with your eyes closed...

and be prepared to be taken to shpongleland.

256kbit encoded mp3's with LAME is so close to lossless compression that you will not be able to tell the difference between this and the bought CD. it has been double blind tested on audiophiles (although alot of people would like to call themselves audiophiles, a double blind test is enough proof).

i'd say that 192kbit compression is close enough for most people.. i highly doubt most people would notice the difference.

shpongle is no different... however, if you were playing back mp3's from your computer, of course you are going to miss out on things. computer's/computer speakers are very much sub-quality, soundwise.

Yeah, there is a drastic difference.

IMO, the way Shpongle can best be experienced is with the commercial CD, with some hi-fi headphones, laying back in the dark with 2-4 grams of mushies.

It will change your life, and change your view about music in general.

Cue Strumpling in 5..4..

most any bad ass recording (read: with a sound engineer that made it past highschool, a hard find now a days), a hi fi system of any type, headphone or otherwise, the depths of electronica in general is staggering.

Since I have gotten into audiophile level with equipment and otherwise I can no longer stand anything but flawless recording quality.
40, dankman and numerous other shroomerites who have heard my car have heard me bitch about it

I have both shpongle CDs and I also have all the MP3s downloaded. When I first purchased the CDs I really couldn't hear any significant differences from the CDs to the MP3s. But the more I listened to the CDs the more I heard. And each time I play one of the CDs I pick up on something new. The CDs are the way to go if you really want to hear Shpongle. And entityexperiment is right, the CD is meant to be listened to as a whole, from start to finish.

my biggest problem with mp3's is the gap between songs. Never heard Shpongle but i know with albums that should be listened as a whole often they are seamless, and the trouble with listening to mp3's is i always get an annoying fucking gap between the songs. Im using winamp and there used to be a great gap remover plugin but now theres just lame crossfade type things.

My mp3 cd player is even worse! takes a few seconds between songs.

Dankman and Jinx have some great recommendations, they led me to buy my set that I am in love with. Really, I am in love with them.

I've got Sennheiser Evolution (EH)2270's.
There's newer models, but my pair is only 3 months old.

Here's some links from shroomery and elsewhere with some great info:

I haven't used them, but they look good for the money.

If you want hi-fi cans tho, you should save up and get hi-fi cans.
The difference can be astounding. But fixed budgets are just that, you can't spend what you don't have. So the Sony's look good for the bones. Any others with advice on these?

 You know what it's about man.

I got an absoulutely killer deal out of the paper. A pair of Sony MDRV700DJ headphones, 3 weeks old, for $80 canadian.  I can never go back to those commom heaphones that are usually seen with discmans/walkmans.

Yeah, I'm surprised strumpling hasn't been in here yet

I reckon vinyl is the way to go if we're talking about small differences! Anyone know if shpongles albums are out on vinyl? I've got Dorset Perception on the sweet wax, but it's a breakbeat remix, so it's not quite the same. Fairly similar, but not quite. But the detail and warmth you get with vinyl is incredible! Smooth analouge sinewaves carved in black wax instead of square 1's and 0's.

And if you want an amplifier to get all that detail that's in the recording you really need to get a NAD!

Grado's

I only have the SR 80s but I used to have 240s or some such number and I have tested every model up to the $2000 (canadian) cans they make and I can say that I can hear a difference all the way up
