The Love of the Guru * 3

Having once again been reminded of the love of my Guru, I felt like writing this today.  Every day, I feel like I get a little clearer on the essence of the Guru, both inner, and outer. I know not everyone might understand where I'm coming from, but this has been my journey.


I remember when I first started out on the path, the idea of a teacher, much less a Guru, was just silly to me. Truth is within, right? Who needs a teacher? Ha! I know I certainly don't. But in truth, I was lost, a complete mess, if I'm being perfectly honest. I needed help, although I couldn't see it at the time. So, when I came across my teacher, he didn't present himself as a teacher. He was just a brother, a friend, someone who had already been to the place I was so desperately seeking and was willing to help me. He was exactly who I needed him to be at that time. He moulded himself into the perfect form that I would accept, even if it meant just appearing as this 'ordinary' person. But he is far, far from ordinary.

The love of the Guru is truly unfathomable. He (or she) is the only person in the world who is truly, 100% looking out for you. Everyone else in the entire world is at least somewhat in it for themselves, even your family, your parents, your partner, your friends. Even when your mother tells you not to do something because it's dangerous, she is partly thinking of how she will feel if you hurt yourself. The Guru alone is without selfish motivation, entirely focussed on what you need to help you succeed with your path. Sometimes that's a hug. Sometimes it's a kick up the bum. But, he always knows exactly what's needed, and everything is done with the utmost compassion and love. He (or she) is your spiritual father (or mother).

The Guru could be in the upper realms, living in complete ecstasy and bliss. The Guru could have achieved Moksha long ago and left this realm for good, and achieved final union with God. But, instead, the Guru births himself into this low, Earthly realm. He squishes his boundless awareness into a limited human body, with it's aches, pains, and suffering. For a time, when he comes back to this world, he even has to again forget who he truly is, and to go through the whole process of untangling from the ego, and all the torment (however illusory) that comes with that. He does this all to help you, so that he can be here in this world with you, to support you, and to help you grow.

And what will he not do to support you? He will dedicate every second of his entire life to helping you. He will teach you, meditate with you, spend endless hours in front of a computer answering half-thought-out emails, repeating himself again and again in the hopes that by the hundredth time you hear any given answer, that you might finally get it. He spends his days helping you here, and his nights helping you in your dreams. Even when he eats and drinks, it's just so that he can stay around a little longer because you need him. He will give you his time, his energy, even his money and the clothes off his back. He does all of this knowing full well that people will still question his motives, because seriously, who can comprehend this amount of love? It just doesn't exist anywhere else in the world.

If you ever have the good merit to meet your Guru in this life (and if you call out with a sincere heart, it might just happen), cling to them, love them, emulate them, and learn everything you can from them. Never let them leave your heart or mind, until you realise one day, that the Guru is in you :heart:

The closest thing to a Guru I've had told me to read the last chapter of one his books the last time I tried to talk to him.

The first page of that chapter has a line that says "I don't need you and you don't need me"... since then I haven't been able to have a conversation with him and he's even written in his later books that he wants people to talk to him about whatever they feel and the time is right for that... but not for me, apparently :/

That does sound a little confusing. I think I would be a bit bewildered in that situation too, although sometimes there is a bigger picture we can't always see. In any case, there are a few teachers out there. Maybe he was just not your Guru.

They say that the Guru and disciple are karmically linked, and that the relationship spans many lifetimes.

I talked to him on skype once and told him about some of my life experiences. He said he thinks I "represent America" so maybe he holds me to a higher standard than others.

One of his main teachings is that you need to "go off on your own" and "relate" to Shri Mataji (the actual guru).

Here is one of my favourite Guru prayers for this special day.



In the north-west of the land of Oddiyaṇa,
In the heart of a lotus flower,
Endowed with the most marvellous attainments,
You are renowned as the ‘Lotus-born’,

Surrounded by many hosts of worshiping dakinis
The Great Mother Herself to your right, the Great Father to your Left
Following in your footsteps,
I pray to you: Come, inspire me with your omniscient blessings of the highest bliss, compassion, wisdom, knowledge and intelligence!
O Great Wonder of Wonders - O Guru Rinpoche!

Guru is the creator
Guru is the preserver
Guru is the destroyer
Guru is verily the Supreme Absolute
To our MahaGuru we prostrate ourselves!

The Guru's form is the root of meditation

and fear – demonic forces

nice prayers/poems - I am familiar with the seven line prayer to Guru Rinpoche you posted PocketLady, though with a different translation. I used it a lot for a period of time :smile:

Well, honestly if you've have told me a few years ago that I would have a guru I would have said you were crazy. But, experiences change people. It's not necessarily about worshipping anyone. The point of a lot of devotional stuff is actually to help free you from ego, to raise someone or something else above yourself, to get away from self-importance.

The only reason a Guru is worthy of devotion is because they have already died.

A guru is a supernatural being who has returned from the dead?
Or
A guru’s wisdom is only recognized posthumously?
Or

Guru (in Hinduism and Buddhism) a spiritual teacher, especially one who imparts initiation.

If you take that definition literally then maybe.

I have a spiritual teacher, one who initiated me. But he also would not allow me to call him a Guru (even though I call him that jokingly)

He is a normal guy, had several wives, fathered kids from different women and left, won't keep a real job most likely to hide from the government. In other words he has flaws and has made mistakes and is probably indistinguishable from any other person.

But in this half Hawaii'n, half Filipino, goofy toothed, pear shaped Tai Chi teacher lay the teachings that shaped and continues to shape my life.

It is no joke, a rare thing to meet a real teacher, probably where all the legends come from about having to be born into thousands of births before finding a real Guru. I would teach classes in Ojai, California (thats where Oprah lives) with him in some of the most opulent and beautiful houses I ever ever seen, rubbing elbows with extremely wealthy people who would exclaim "How lucky you are to have learned so young!"

How different life would be to grow old and never learn. How strange it made me feel to have all these people meet my teacher and see the adoration in their eyes. They would know him as Rama Ananda Das, I just saw Rodney my friend and brother a strange and enigmatic person with many names and supernatural abilities to initiate even a young american christian kid like me.

It’s that the imaginary existence of ego has died, leaving what truly exists as it is.

In this sense, I’d say that the only good Guru is a dead Guru.  :dead:
