Some dipshit kid got caught stealing wine, the owner's grandson chased him down and tackled him, and a small fracass of defamatory statements revolving around racism got whipped up.  The bakery sued Oberlin for faciliting the aforementioned fracass (i.e. with material and monetary support, not by inculcating liberal values or whatever dumb shit angers neocons), the court agreed and now Oberlin owes the bakery damages.  Basically, it's a sensationalized dog whistle of an article for closeted white nationalists who are sick of racist crap being called out.  Gives them hope for thought control.

Fun game: If somebody bitches about how colleges impose thought control in the name of liberal-lgbt-humanist-progressive values, then I have to drink tequila.  I'm just going to go out and do that right now since we all know that it's coming sooner or later.

This jury verdict will not survive appeal.

How is the college responsible for libel? These people just went for the deep pockets. What a ridiculous verdict.

Okay, so the kid that was shoplifting really needs to catch a shoplifting charge. That part is obvious.

The bakery owner's son/grandson/whoever needs to catch an assault charge. We have police that deal with this thing for a reason. Chasing and attacking a dude, that's fucked up. Either assault or vigilantism. Pick one.

Oh, and the bakery owes the college legal fees. The fuck they suing a college for what the students of said college say, on their own time? Can I get sued for what friends say when they come over to my place?

Just because the dude admitted to shoplifting doesn’t mean he wasn’t racially profiled. If that is the basis for the libel claim, I don’t know how anyone could determine that. It seems to be a matter of opinion and beyond the scope of libel. I don’t know how Ohio works, but I sat on a jury in a civil case involving damages and it was kind of a joke. First off, at least in DC, a civil verdict doesn’t require a unanimous decision, only a majority of the jurors. Second, the jurors I served with seemed more interested in helping the woman suing because she was in need, and not because she was legally entitled. The fact is, juries can do whatever the fuck they want. They can feel sorry for someone and hand them a victory.

This case never should have made it to trial.

I think the college made a mistake in allowing a jury trial in the first place. They should have requested a bench trial. A jury made up of townies with a the plaintiff a townie over racial issues. Hell no.

From what I can tell, it appears the dude tried to buy wine, was denied, and ran with the bottle.

That's pretty goddamn clear shoplifting. He needs to go down for that.

The college should never have been involved, period. Couple college students protested, which is their right, first amendment, and then for some dumbass reason the college got named in the lawsuit. Which should have been laughed out of court, but wasn't, for some reason.

Owner's kid should be catching a charge too, though. You don;t chase a shoplifter for several blocks and tackle them. That's like that one fuckhead that shot a dude to death over a 16$ hatchet a few months back. That's not just stupid, that's danger to society level stupid.

The reason is obvious. The college is the only entity they could sue and make $$$$. A jury would be far more reluctant to order an individual to pay $11 million. They aren’t going to care as much about the fate of a college. They can afford it.

Because the administration gave the protestors access to student funds specifically for the protest.  Much as people want to take it in that direction, this isn't some neoconservative lashing out against those darned SJWs.  Conflating this with that whole schism is what kicked the whole thing off in the first place.

It pays to get outside of the swirling clusterfuck of rage and fear of the other that seems to guide our culture.

How do you figure that he was racially profiled while being caught in the act of a crime? Is asking for i.d racially profiling someone?

Maybe they followed them around the store. Or was extra suspicious. I don’t know what  the dude was thinking.

  If someone is caught committing a crime because they were racially profiled, it’s still racial profiling. Sometimes racial profiling works.
