What does it take to find a Tattoo apprenticeship ??
    #26039377 -

So ive been building a portfolio and i really want to get a tattoo apprenticeship.
im getting my first tattoo of my own design below which im getting done on sunday

when i showed it to the tattooist he was impressed and wanted to see more of my work and i showed him my 2 colored psychedelic pieces in my sig and some of my portraits

he asked me if i was taught by someone and i said self taught and he said all the best artists are.
so like i made a good impression but i was too scared to ask about apprenticeships because im assuming they get that shit all the time and didnt want to bug them.

basically im asking if anyone knows what it takes portfolio wise to land this type of gig, i really want to get into it before i get too old, im 25 right now and the clock is ticking.
im working on building my portfolio but basically im asking those with experience in this kind of stuff if its worth me trying to look or is my work not strong enough and need to increase ability,
ive been looking for tattoo forums to ask this kind of stuff but i cant find any communtiy like that

thanks guys!

Like anything in life it is going to be a mix of the right timing and your persistence.

Chat your artist up on how they got started during your session and take it from there.  I think a lot of it comes down to personality and your ability to watch and learn without being intrusive.

Good luck and let us know how it goes

This is gonna sound a little retarded but watch a bunch of Ink Master and stuff like that. Tv shows can be dumb for sure but you can learn a lot about tattoos watching them. I'm not trying to discourage you in any way but if you look at those images you drew they don't work for a new artist and certainly would be very very difficult to get the shading right, plus with something like blue and you're working with a water colour style, that shit fades. Light colours fade, and then you and lighter and darker splotches, that unevenness that gives it that water colour character. I'm not saying it's impossible it would just fade quickly and that sort of tat is difficult to freshen up. Or look at the neck of the first pic, that will blend together over time looking like a blob because there are no lines. The top is a geometric pattern too so the lines need to be precisely straight or it looks weird. A lot of this you'll learn in the apprenticeship but design choice is very important, all the way down to basic lines and shader because you don't just want cool art, you want stuff that is both accessible for the client as well as something that's not just going to hold up over time but something that's accessible enough for the next artist to not ruin doing a touch up. Like it's good art, awesome drawing dude. But if you want apprenticeship then a good start is your own research and particularly about design choice and new techniques. Because there's simply shit you can and can't do with tattoos but that doesn't mean there isn't work arounds. Maybe you already know all this stuff but if you expect to pull off that Harley Quinn even in the first few years then you'll quickly be disappointed in your progress. Basically just do some research and don't get discouraged. Try drawing without fixing mistakes. That way you have to plan it out and take your time, like a tattoo

yeah i know there are things you can and cant do, although i follow a lot of tattoo artists on instagram and i have literally seen that image of harley as a tattoo in one piece
but yeah il need to know what i can and cant pull off, this is basically showing people what skill level im working with, i improve rapidly though so i just need time to strengthen my portfolio if it wont cut it,

I wish I would have kept drawing as a kid.  My brother still really enjoys his art and I feel like it would have helped give me a positive outlet for energy.  I will occasionally doodle but nothing too special.

Keep up the good work op.

thank you! and yes drawing is very therapeutic. i have been dealing with heartbreak and its the only thing that has been helping me get through it, oddly enough my technical ability increase dramatically after the trauma, often makes me wonder if suffering does increase artistic ability, they say it doesnt and its a myth because they dont want people to stop seeking treatment to make good art but if suffering was that easy to heal from then treatment would have a much better reputation.

Those portraits are really detailed, good work!

I'm not sure about the piece you drew for your tattoo though. Is it a sketch for the artist to work from or are you planning on a 1 for 1 of it? Your portrait drawings show to me that you have a lot more capacity for focus and detail than the tattoo drawing indicates.

I believe you should continue working on the design before committing to the ink personally, I believe you could work the same design a bit better, with a bit more finesse around the edges, smoother caricature in the masks. Something that can be continued off of more easily too if you decide to expand it.

The dead space under their chins could be filled out a bit or just covered with the masks from a different angle, the geometric patterns above the masks could be more exact if you use measurements to draw it out in the background and then layer the masks on top of it. And the colors/shading could be a little more keyed in if color is what you're planning for.

I like the concept, but I urge you to work on it a bit if you're planning on getting it tattooed on you, especially if you have a plan to start doing tattoo work yourself.

I asked the tattoo artist if he wanted to change it up a bit but he said it was fine the way it is. I tried to make it easy to pull off and not take too long. Personally I'm happy with it, it doesn't have to be perfect for me, it's my first anyways. I like the way it is
Might ask for a but more symmetry in the geometry but that's about it

I second this Sleepy. I love the concept but I'm not a fan of the masks. If you look at the faces either side of my neck they represent the same thing. Perhaps you could go with faces instead? They're my favourite tattoo of all:

Also, I'm trying to get hold of an ex of mine who became a tattooist to ask her opinion for you. We're due a catch up anyway. I'll post what she says after we talk.

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

Thanks man, I just got the image done, he told me that I should be skeptical of other peoples opinion about it and trust my own artistic intuition. He personally felt the design was perfect and told me more detail would have made it blur out more overtime and that it was good instinct to simplify it a bit. He said it's technically an American traditional-esque style but obviously a bit different. He's a great artist too, some of his realism stuff is really impressive. I'm personally happy with the work he has done. We talk about all kinds of deep stuff and I get the impression he really likes me, he wants to try dmt too lol, he said he likes my  art a lot and how I'm not it to just be instagram famous but to actually Express something. He commented on the mixing of zbrush array meshing into my digital art. He told me their operation is like a family and the kind of people they take on for apprenticeships are people they take a liking too and see are serious and respect the industry. He clearly believed I was one of them so I told him I'm gonna think up a new design that he will have fun with and research more about what makes good tattoos. He told me he loved the design and had fun doing it, which apparently doesn't happen all the time with him. We definitely had a lot in common I was surprised. Both are tool fans too lol. talked about alex grey, chapel of sacred mirrors and other psychedelic artists.
