Agar to Grain question
    #25968243 -

Howdy folks,
I've been delving into the world of agar with pasty plates and having some success, but I originally started doing pf cakes about a month ago.
So I have been getting a little ahead of myself in terms of what I have room to deal with.
Basically I have about 20 agar plates colonizing but really only room to do a couple shoeboxes.
So I was wondering if it would be beneficial at all to use 2 plates of colonized agar per quart grain jar?  Or would that just be overkill/useless?

On a side note, can you keep clean, colonized agar in the fridge to store? Or will they keep at room temp (thought I saw pasty say they can keep up to 6 months, may have been an old thread though)

Thanks in advance!

(Sorry if this has been asked/clarified, I expended my search tricks to find anything relevant to using 2+ plates per jar)

I wanna know the answer as well. I have several plates with nice growth and some are getting closer to the edge. I made two agar LCs the other night just cuz I have several.

I've never done Agar to Grain with more than one plate by jar. I think two won't be a problem, but you'll have more chances of contamination (you'll necesary need to keep the jars open for longer), so as it's not necessary I wouldn't do it.

I've always been storing clean plates in the fridge, and I haven't had problems, so I'd just store them until needed. Good luck!

Sweet thanks for the info, exactly what I was looking for. I figured the more surface area/jar open time would outweigh the possible benefits of using 2.

Do you let the plates colonize all the way or just kind of put whatever clean myc is present into 'hibernation' in the fridge?

Haha I think I did the same thing, with the leftover myc from transfers I squirted some sterilized water into the plate and sucked it back up.  Just because I had so much and I wanted to give it a shot.  I'm actually getting my first grain jar ready as I type this...Gonna just squirt the "LC" in after its ready and get a better feel for what I should be looking for (good or bad).

Exciting having things going after so much research and shitty PF jar attempts.  Agar is seriously easier, which is said over and over but as a noob I didn't want to hear it

Well, maybe there are some cultivators doing two plates in one jar cause it decreases time of colonization without problems... I just said that I've never done it and that nowadays I wouldn't. Lets wait for some different opinions hehe

About fridge I'd wait for fully colonization, specially when you're planning use them to make more spawn.

Just put your plates in an insulated  lunchbox in the fridge. I do 1/3 plate per jar. And will pull petris out when needed.

Just use the plates you want to grow out for now and shelve the rest for later. I don't even put mine in the fridge and they last for at least 3 months (though I've used them out to 6 months when I have to go back sometimes).

I don't recommend having your jars open any more than the briefest amount that they need to be, so the more you noc it up with the longer it's open the more likely you'll get contam.

Be short and sweet, then save your plates for future projects

I'm still waiting to see if my LC worked. Inoculated 7 quarts of oats with 10 CC's each. Tonight will be day 2 hoping to see something when I get home, just to know if I did it right.

and if you want more innoc points cut your plates into pieces, look up the tiger drop 2.0 or whatever it's called. Basically run your blade through your agar a couple times in perpendicular directions making a series of x's which cuts your plate into pieces and dump that into your grain jar. Works very well.
