Notably it does not make the claim that the trend holds true within the human species, and it gives some examples of primates where the trend within the species for showy features vs testicle size is the opposite. Which is what you would expect, since bigger testicles would tend to produce more testosterone as well as more sperm.


But in species where showy features don't convey much advantage in breeding opportunities, all males really need to compete on is sperm volume. So even if testosterone levels are as high as you would expect due to the big testicles, it's advantageous not to put energy into showy features even with those high testosterone levels, because the females are less likely to care anyway. Genes that code for "don't develop showy features even if testosterone levels are high" aren't going to tend to be advantageous in species where showy features do give a significant advantage in breeding opportunities.
