I am thinking of buying a Ball Python or a Corn snake
    #3266639 - 10/23/04 02:21 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Hello
I have been doing some research about snakes and have decided on those 2 species as my final choice.
Anyone here have either of these?
Which would you prefer or recommend?
The Corn snakes I like because of the color mutations.
The Ball pythons are neat too, they are the classic snake in my mind.
Ok if I got a Corn snake what color is your favorite?

http://www.corn-utopia.com/Corn%20Utopia%20on%20the%20Web/Snakes%20I'm%20Breeding%20subsite.htm

I want to hear about your snakes and any advice or warning before I make my purchase.
Thanks

ball python. They are good snakes, not as finicky or skittish as a smaller corn snake.

Get a young one and handle it a lot. Give it really good treatment and a nice cage and it will crawl around your room and lay in your lap for hours on end.

Mine used to climb my desk, and get up on my warm monitor then hang its head down and look at me.

That sounds soo neat.
I couldn't let mine loose around the house though as I have fishtanks and a Pomeranian. Not to mention the rest of my zoo.....
3 cats
2 gerbils
1 Pomeranian
2 lovebirds
1 Senegal parrot
1 saltwater reef tank
1 guppy/tetra tank
2 outside rabbits for meat.
8 outside chickens for meat.

I know it wouldn't eat my doggie..but my wife would freak out at the thought.
With supervision though I would love to hang out at the computer with my python on my lap or shoulders.
Just in case you are wondering I know he WILL eat my birdies and gerbils...and I will make sure to only handle him with NONE of their scent on me.
Also I was thinking about setting up a 10 gallon for feeder baby gerbils.

Mostly jumbo rabits, the big ass ones that weigh about 15 pounds, except that she got to where whe would eat 3 in one sitting, so now I just feed her a 45 pound pig or goat once a month....

Good news!
I convinced my parents to make a Christmas gift of the snake(s)
I am so excited I cant wait!!!!
I am trying to decide on a pair of {het} albino ball pythons or a pair of {het} Piebald ball pythons.
I cant decide! Help me pick which morph to get.
I like them both some much, they are the most beautiful snakes I have ever seen.
If I am lucky and do everything right I may have a pure morph within a year or two. I don't plan on selling them if I do get a pure morph..which I should by all accounts get 2....
But I will sell or give away the hets and normals.
Then If it happens I will go ahead and buy another het and cross breed it with the pure morph and start selling. Never know!!??
I cant wait. I have a video on breeding ball pythons and got back from the library yesterday with a stack full of books.
Wish me luck!
p.s. I will have to wait till Christmas to order them, but I will put a down payment with my own funds if my angel lets me.... :frown:

im assuming your aware what hets are. normal looking animals that crry the resessive trait. piebalds are undoubtably beautifull. my favs in fact. but if breeding is the goal i wouldnt, at least for your first time. peids are notorious for havin glots of problems hatching and being HORRIBLE feeders.

balls are dope snakes, they are the first boid i ever bred. but in all honesty a corn is a far better option. a lot of balls from pet shops are wc and have feeding/parasite problems, not really a worry if your buying hets thoguh (probably). corns always eat unless there is a big problem, they grow faster and are 4 million times easier to breed. balls are easy but NOTHING is as easy as them common north american colubrids.

its up to you, corns are gonna cost more for feeding as they are way active and eat tons, balls are lazy slugs. i have only been bitten once from a ball, and that was mommy gaurding the eggs. very laid back snake.

also keep in mind. if future breeding is the goal, albinos cannot be bred together. albino to albino will give you now baby balls. the mutation is so fucked up, they either dont develop, hatch, or survive after a few days. gotta do het to het or het to albino. im sure youve already read that.

if speed is your goal, 2 years is the absolute minimum a ball can breed, but more likely 3. corns *can* go in 1 year. but then corns your lucky to get $20 for, balls are worth a fair bit.

and lastly as im sure youve read your het to het will not give you hets. they will give you 66% hets. important to say that when selling them.

how do snakes pee and crap? like if you had one just crawling around the room for a while, would you have to worry about turds or pee? sounds kind of funny but i have no idea about these things...

It all kinda comes out at once. Its not a problem with smaller specimens, but with the big ones its a real chore.

your best bet for a first snake is a corn snake. ball pythons are very timid, and with some exceptions most of the time when you pick them up they will curl up into a ball and arnt all that fun to handle. corn snakes are almost always eager to slither around on your hand, and are very tame and gentle. theres a pic of my snake in my avatar.

i have a male corn that i breed w/ the female in the picture. i would take pics but he is brumating through the winter.

last summer she layed 13 eggs for me of those 10 hatched and lived. i use a double tub incubater and moist verm for the eggs if you care.

oh yeah i forgot i had these pics uploaded too. common snapper that ive had for 13 years, i got him when he was the size of a qaurter, and my eastern hognose.

i took a huge risk to get this shot, but i like it.
