Why wouldn't one start with growing PE?
    #25905587 -

Seems to me that PE can be grown just like the other cubes, except I've consistently seen that PE is noticeably more potent by weight than all other cubes. So why wouldn't everybody start with a syringe of PE? Seems like more people start with B+ or GT, perhaps there is a tradeoff that comes with growing PE?

PE are typically much slower to colonize so there is a higher chance of contams. So its suggested that you get a few successes under your belt while honing your sterile techniques before you attempt PE. Thats all, but if you feel like you could do it, give it a shot by all means!

PE can be a bit of a pain in the ass. IT can tend to mutate and produce blobs unless the conditions are right. It colonizes and fruits slowly. Additionally since it doesn't readily give up ts spores, so you really need to start it on agar to get a clean culture. It is fun though.

Colonizes at the same speed as other cubes, only takes longer to fruit/mature.

Well out of the 5 or so grows of PE that I have done, they have colonized slower than other cubes.

Maybe MS to grain sure, but that has zilch to do with it being PE. My APE even colonized the same speed as most others, but took over a month to mature.

I suppose you could say that... but if it takes forever to pin even though it appears to be fully colonized, is it really? Not saying you're wrong I guess it is a matter of semantics. My experience with PE grows have always been that it seems to colonize fully but takes quite a bit longer to start pushing out pins and matures slower. I always considered colonization complete when the sub, or cakes if that's your style, start to begin fruiting.
Than again as long as it fruits you're golden.

I dont know about you Aiko but I miss the new years shows in oakland!

Getting clean spores from PE is more difficult with its lack of veil and inability to properly eject spores.
It colonizes the same as any cube.
It takes" longer " to pin but i mean were only talking a matter of days so i dont even consider this whatsoever.

Some people do start with PE they are usually the ones who do better research and post a grow within their first few posts

It's also trickier to have an 'impressive' PE grow. It's not too difficult to grow a GT or B+ shoebox for a first grow and look like a rockstar.

My two cents, and i've grown a lot of Penis. Blobs are the number one reason i don't grow  as much PE anymore. I've had cultures that consistently put out amazing flushes start blobbing out on me and giving me almost nothing. Some blobs are cool and will get huge but a lot of the time I'd end up with an entire "canopy" of tiny little "brain blobs". The only way i found to stop this (most of the time) is to apply a proper 50/50+ casing. This is just another 4 steps (making up, adjusting and checking PH, pasteurizing and applying) that standard cubes don't need. These steps are also potential contam vectors.

And then you have the longer spawn to fruit time, which technically allows more times for contams to take hold. This shouldn't matter if your innoculant and spawn are clean but most folks aren't as clean as they think they are.

The real answer, as bodhi tried to tell me when i was just a young pup, is to find GOOD GENETICS. MS to agar to agar (until undeniably clean) to grain to bulk sub (coir). A quick clone hunt and some potency tests can result in a clone of any cube variety that is easier, faster and just about every bit as potent.

I still have tons of PE cultures in cold storage and will bust them out some day in search of the golden PE genetics. If i find something that pins quickly, doesn't produce blobs and is wicked potent... I'll start growing that. But until then, some of my other clones just make more sense.

Try maintaining proper conditions for 4 weeks vs 1-2 weeks and not triching out. I've learned that the hard way with AA+ last summer. They took on average 4-6 weeks from spawn/fruiting (bottles) to pinning, but produced some short, dense and fat 120g monsters. :mushroom2:

Spore germination is not the issue with PE. Spores are genetically all different and will germinate whenever their genetics, health and the present conditions allow.

I guess i am assuming those are from ms syringes though.

Yeah, the colonization rates of each doesn't prove or disprove anything as far as the topic of the thread goes but.... I guess maybe you were just showing us what you have rolling. looking good though man.

And here he is 😂 I was gifted a grow kit by a friend, I know, I know, I was interested to give it a try and due to the non existent financial outlay I thought why not. This was before I had discovered PF Tek.

I must say the mycelium seemd to colonize the substrate (vermiculite based)? VERY quickly. Within a week the cake was completely white and balls had began forming on the surface.
As for pins... I would say 14 days after noticing the mycelium balls went by before noticing a single pin. In fact, due to using a grow kit and not knowing to wrap the cake caused my first pins to appear on the sides, between substrate and the box.
So it was back here to do more research and I found nothing suggesting they would do damage if left. Concerned for contaminating my cake, I left them to their own devices.
Nearly 4 weeks from starting, I have now began harvesting... I have only taken the ones who's veil has started to break, alongside some I classified as aborts due to the significant lack of growth over the last 7 days.
I have fanned twice a day to increase FAE and followed an outdated kit method with relatively good results.
I have no presence of unwanted colours or smells, in fact it smells overwhelmingly of psilocybin to me
My larger shrooms literally bleed blue in the center, but I would like a professional opinion on some of these smaller aborts please.
Slight grey discoloration of the cap, with an almost green tint at the bottom and very small in size. Out of the whole cake I have 2 of this appearance, and probably 4 healthy looking aborts.
I am aware that moisture may have been an issue, some of the caps have actually touched the plastic bag on occasion but I seemingly got away without any blotching.

As this is my first cultivation, I am a little cautious but also don't wish to throw away anything good.

Currently drying using desiccant after 36 hours air drying covered by an open window.

So much appreciation in advance fellow psychonauts <3
