I would start over. Did you use tap water without boiling? The same thing happened to me my first time. It is possible that you would stop the growth or kill the contaminants in sterilizing, but I still wouldn't want them in their with my good fungus. I know it's a pain to realize you have to do it all again, but it's worth it not to make any compromises.

Yes I did mix tap water with the rice flour/verm. mix. I was going by the MMGG and I didn't see anywhere anything about not using tap water or boiling the water before mixing it either. If I boil tap water next time will I be ok or should I use bottled water? If i get bottled water, do I need to boil that too?Does anyone else agree or disagree with Jonah about starting over? I just want to get a second opinion. Thanx for the info tho jonah

Doomhammer, the whole point in sterilizing is to kill competitive fungi and bacteria, that would compete for nutrients and space with your desired fungus and inhibit its growth. You are supposed to sterilize the prepared jar within 24 hours or you have lost. Contrary, once you sterilized the jars, you theoreticaly could store them for some weeks, but I don`t recomend it, since a sterilisation process seldomly is 100%.This way there are still some bacteria or fungi left and over a time they develop and render your substrate useless. So: mix it, cook it, let it cool down(6+ hours), and innoculate it.------------------ It?s easy to do without silver and gold or even pleasures of love but its hard to do without mushrooms. Anything that you think will come in contact with the cake, MUST be sterilized. It's not very smart to set the jars up and then wait until the syringe got in the mail. Your allowing too much time for other bacteria to reach the cake. If I were you I'd do the cakes over. Make sure to sterilize the tip of the syringe also, you don't want the spores getting contaminated.

Alright thanx all I think I got the point now. It all has to be done around the same time. I really didn't think that the fungus would take over so quickly and I thought the spores would be here by now.I also thought it would be smarter to sterilize the jars the day that I had planned to put the spores in because then there would be little chance of there being anything strong enough to kill my spores. Now I know that I will have to do it all at once instead. Does the syringe really have to be sterilized though? I am getting the spores from PF, and I thought I read that they sterilize it and keep the tip in a sterile cover. Will I have to worry about any of the spores dying by sterilizing the needle? steralise the needle of the syringe before incoulating by holding it in a flame until it is red hot. I do this after every jar. You will hear the sizzling of the water that is currently in the needle, but this is such a small volume compared to what is in the syring its far better to loose this than risk contams.

Use bottled water either spring or distilled. Sterilize with a pressure cooker at 15 psi for 20 minutes, or boil (at lowest possible temp to maintain bubbly hot water.) in a tightly covered pot for 1 hour. If you're using straight PF Tek just rtfm and you'll be fine. Good luck.
