Instead of PCooking or boiling, do you think it would work if I put them in a 3 piece vegetable steamer for a while? If it's prossible, how long would I have to put em in for? Thanks.

When you can affored it, I suggest getting a pressure cooker. Not only does it sterilize your jars it cooks a mean corned beef - well worth the investment.

I went strickly with PF tek on my cakes. Steamed them (pasturized) for one hour, just barley boiling, no water even touching the jars, with the lids loose. Out of 24 jars I had zero contaminations.

its the heat of the steam in a PC that sterilizes, so if you've got hot steam in your vegie thingy, then your okay.

Yes, you shouldn?t forget though, that the steam in the PC is hotter than in a normal pot or steamer.

Along this same line of thought, would a Crock Pot work to sterilize jars?

A question as far as pressure cookers are concerned. I belive that most sterlization notes refer to the best pressure being 15psi.... Many cheaper pressure cookers are set at 10 psi. Does anyone know if 10 psi or pressure is enough? ... if so should the time frame of steaming be increased? Thanks

DONT USE A CROCK POT!!!!!!!!!
I just spent most of the weekend partying and makeing some home made chillie via a crock pot. Most of the crock pots that I have seen, on the highest setting, are NOT HOT ENOUGH! Most will easily take over an hour just to get to the boiling point (my 3/4 filled pot of chillie took 3 hours just to START BOILING!) and thats as hot as they get. There not designed the same way. The purpose of a crock pot is to slooowly cook food and to allow the food to set in a kitchen, safely ready to serve for as long as 24 to 48 hours. They get just hot enough to cook on high, and just hot enough to kill the germs on low. They are in no way whats needed for substrat sterlization. It seems to me that any regular large pot (I prefer stainless steel) or a "steamer"/basket set up is as inexpensive and much better than a crock pot.
