Coir tek moisture question

How do you decide that the moisture is okay in a coir tek before adding grains to it?
And how do you get rid of extra moisture? By just letting it stand without a lid?

I use the old school squeeze test.  You want your coir at field capacity before spawning to it.  You get to field capacity by adding water until you can grab a fistful of coir, squeeze, and only a few drops trickle out.

If your cooir is too wet then add more dry coir or verm in until you get it to field capacity.

Search on here for " field capacity". If I squeeze a handful of my coir a drop or two of water comes out. Only a drop or two. Hope this helps?

Thanks for the advices.
Okay. I did the squeeze test before, but it was actually a bit more wet than one or two drops.
Next time I will be more careful and then and coir/verm until it's good.

you should bring coir to field capacity.. that means when you squeeze handful amount of coir hard there should be few water drops coming out.. anything more is over field capacity.. so there is no getting rid of moisture if you prepare it right... read teks.. there is a lot about coir/verm substrate..  standard rule is: 1 brick, 2qt of verm, 4qt of water... but every coir brick is different, i found out if i use this standard model I'm out of field capacity, so I'm using 3-3.5qt of water (3000-3300ml)... you can take like 20-30g of dry coir put it in bowl, and start with 5 times more water, so for 20g dry coir use 100ml of water and see is it at filed capacity after some time and mixing, if you see a lot water coming out with 5 times more water then take another 20g of dry coir and try 4.. so on and so on.. for my coir i multiply by 3.6-4 to get amount of water, and for every qt of verm if you doing coir/verm substrate i add 250ml of water.. hope this helps.

I just squeeze it and if its too wet i add vermiculite or just squeeze it dry as i put it in the tub

i would add verm and mix till filed capacity.. i hope you didnt add way to much water
