Can anybody point me in the right direction for a good coco coir casing tek? Sterilization and amounts are what i'm looking for in particular. thanks.

I use straight coco coir, nothing added. I sterilize it in the microwave with some extra water, then I cover it with saran wrap asap and put it in the fridge to cool down. Then I get a glove that I sterilize with alcohol, grab the coir, squeeze as much water as i can, and then crumble on top.

how long do you put it in the microwave for? and doesn't the coco coir need the ph balancing?

>how long do you put it in the microwave for? Take a bowl of water, and then microwave it until it boils. Make sure there's something inside the bowl(like one macaroni or some rice) so the water doesn't super heat. When it starts to boil, record the time, and add like 2 minutes on top of that.
>and doesn't the coco coir need the ph balancing? Does it? I have no idea. My 2nd flush is coming along beautifully, and I didn't use any PH balancers.

I used a little dash of calcium carbonate. Check the label for the pH mine was "5 - 6.5" and the ideal is 7. Calcium carbonate can't take the pH beyond 8 so it wouldn't hurt to toss a little tablespoon or something in. I'm having kickass flushes too. Lots of people don't use anything so I'm sure you'd be fine without it.

damn, well it's too late to add it to mine. How do you test the pH?

Trichoderma perfers low (acidic) pH, and coir has a low pH so it is safer to raise the pH a bit. Mycelium will also excrete acidic metabolites which raise the pH of the casing layer over time, so you need something to buffer the pH such as oyster shell or calcium carbonate. I use hydrated lime (to raise the pH initially) and crushed oyster shell (to buffer the pH long-term), but I'm sure calcium carbonate (limestone) powder would do just as well.

I'm replying to this older thread to bump it up and use it as background to get a question answered and as you can see, I have searched. I'd like to hear some specific tek/recipes for coco coir casing. Seems to me that getting the proper water content and pH would be the toughest part (if you want to call that tough) this seems to be an excellent casing material but there isn't much specific information concerning the use of it. Of particular interest to me would be the ratios of water to volume of coir, sterilization (if any) time/methods. Ratios in volume of pH buffers/raising. I'd like some baseline recipes to work from and experiment for optimal recipes. TIA
