Uhm-

Get a CDRW instead of a CDR.

Make sure it has a fast read capability (if you're going to use it as the only cdrom drive)

Uhhhh

I've had my burner for over a year and honestly have never used a re-writable cd. If you record audio on a CDRW you can only play it on CDRW drives. So if you find a burner thats only CDR and a whole lot less money i'd go with that. But you probably won't find that anymore. They usualy only sell them as CDR/CDRW.
As for a brand i would reccomend Hewlett Packard. I haven't had any problems with the burner itself...the different programs you can use is another story. Some of my friends who have Maxell's and other brands have had to get the burner fixed a couple times.

I've used RW's multiple times

System backup/restore
MP3's (you can add to it!)
Games (see above)

Most newer generation CD-ROM drives (even without write capability) can read these RW cd's....

Be sure the software included with your writer enables it to write at optimum speed. I bought an hp9100 8x cdwriter for 250. However ,the software included only allowed you to write at 2x. Needless to say I had to spend another 120 bucks to upgrade the software. what a scam!

I used to have a HP 7200i (2x2x6x I think)but this broke just over a year of use, lucky we got it on a visa which had an extended year warrenty and I got the money back and bought a new one (ricoh 6x4x12x) both writes have burnt many PSX and AUDIO with no problems, and only real coasters i've made was because of my fault... also look into one of the new drives that are CAR+CDRW+DVD-ROM's

I have a Plextor plexwriter 4 / 12. it's great. I think cd-rw's are pointless. The cd-rw disks cost too much, and you can re-write to the same CDR until it's full. The gold / gold disks can also be read by just about any cd-rom. So that means you can burn something and have your friend's crappy cd-rom, enjoy it too. It's also kind of nice because you end up with archives of everything. Purchasing one 50 cd spindle will last you a long time.

I have an oldass 2x/2x cdrw burner. To format a cdrw record takes about 3 hours, but to format a regular cdr takes only one minute. Thats why I never use cdrw's.

I have a Sony 10x4x32x SCSI and it rocks! I can burn a full audio cd in about 6 minutes.
I mostly use the RW functionality for backup/archive stuff.
Alot of newer home cd players are able to read RW cds now by the way.
