Should I fruit shoebox like a cake? And very small pink contam. * 1

This is my first grow and I essentially used the shoebox tek except I spawned using pf cakes because I didn't want to fruit them as cakes. Anyways my surface wasn't very level and now I'm paying for it. The shoebox is in my sgfc and i have tons of side pins and none on the surface.

So my question is should I birth the whole thing like a cake and fruit it with all 5 sides exposed?

Also I found a very small spot on the top that was almost bright pink and glossy. I scooped the whole area around it very carefully and removed. Is this okay? What is it?

Clone that fruit and take a print. I would expect little more.

There are side pins because the conditions are better for them to form right between the wall and the substrate. Your surface conditions were poor.

Also, scooping out a contamination is not going to help anything. It's all mixed in there.

I’m currently fruiting a sidepinning shoebox as a cake, it’s working decently.  I used CV and grain spawn though. I also dunked the cake for 12 hours after picking off a bunch of aborts.  I’m also experimenting with verm casings, and trust me it’s not worth it.

I know my surface conditions were poor.i admit that haha. So should i take it out of the shoebox?

If the contam is just in all of it, do i need to toss the whole thing?

You could, but don't try to fruit it again. It's only a matter of time before it starts throwing mold spores everywhere and fungal gnats start filling your grow area.

You could just continue the fruiting outside, just put it somewhere shady and make sure it doesn't dry out.

Yup!! Works great for a bunch of smaller grows.  I just find it pretty hard to keep a good RH by dubbing shoeboxes.

Don't dub them, I learned the hard way. You seem to be doing something right lol.

Cubes don't need a ridiculous amount of rh, I like to see my greenhouse between 70-80%

Yeah I mist the walls of the tub 2-4 times a day and the surface of the cake once a day. The verm casing definitely isn’t ideal though, can’t tell when it’s dry and doesn’t hold moisture like a coir casing does.

I just got done fruiting this one. I took it out and put it in a slightly bigger box and I bottom watered it way too much. Dunno if it was a great idea but it worked ok.

Well i removed the whole thing and im fruiting it like a cake. The side pins are already thanking me. I guess ill just fruit until contams take over unless I see more pink show up. Then it'll go straight to the trash

is that a straight verm casing?? If so, how did you prepare it?
I'm trying to decided weather or not to add a straight verm top layer to a few of my boxes that have exposed grains.

I've take them out the tray and fruited them with all sides exposed. If the condiitons improve you'll get a good 2nd flush.

Sweet, hoping I can get at least 2 flushes out of it. I already have another shoebox colonizing now thats much more level. Hopefully the flatter surface conditions will eliminate some of the side pins. Im just gonna leave the lid on or partially cracked to fruit that one.

Yup, straight verm.  I just soaked it to field capacity and put about a 1/4 inch deep casing.  I would stick to CV, maintains moisture wayyyyyy better.
