Is a cool mist old school?
    #25877197 -

Hi all. I'm just not satisfied with the results of any terrariums I've tried - sgfc, soda bottle, humidity chamber. They require too much maintenance, and either dry out or waterlog the cake in my conditions. I also struggle to get any pins for at least a fortnight when I put them in.

So from reading thru coolmists seem like the ideal lo maintenance controllable technique with both fae and humidity which I struggle to balance. The only thing is it seems like no one uses them anymore? Is it worth getting one for say a 60-70l tub? Cheers

I do have one that I am using in a fruiting chamber ( martha tek). I run it with a humidity controller. I am now trying to dial in shoebox grows. I am going. About things a bit backwards. I have fruits, now I want to better understand how to passively create the right conditions and learn how to grow them outside of my fruiting chamber. Have you tried using micropore tape to control your Fae? I think pasty white did a writeup on it and posted it on the site?  Good vibes to you and your grow.

Thanks bud. No haven't yet must research a bit. I just can't seem to get the balance. Good fae and the cakes dry out. Not enough and they waterlog or contam. Bottom line it's just not performing fruits are real slow. Also some automation would be great too.

From further reading I understand that a coolmist won't provide me with all humidity I need. But that's no big problem as I can supplement with a bed of soggy vermiculite in the tub. The tub will be sealed to maintain this rh bar an exhaust hole and inlet for coolmist. I'll probably need to use a timer too I believe but this can be dialled in. I'm thinking a short period of coolmist/fae once an hour for starters then take it from there

I grew a 71 gram shroom in 3 days. I 5hink it does alright. Now I want to learn how to do it BODS WAY. THE hydro controller kicks the humidifier on  at 80% rh. It will stop raising the humidity when it reaches 95% ( it still rises for a bit after the humidifier kicks off. I run a fan on a timer in my martha. It kicks on every 3 hours. I also have a set of blue led grow lights. My tubs and blocks never dry out in it. I add aittle bleach or h202 to the water in the humidifier. Looks like my blocks are starting to flush now for the third time. Now I am working on my genetics. 😉

Nice dude. U sound like me. I have similar curiosity and technical mind and not only do I love the mushrooms but also appreciate their whole life cycle and want to keep exploring and adding bits on to improve the grows.

That humidity controller sounds ideal they hard come by?

Nope a hydroponic supply store or ebay. Inkbird I think makes a decent one. If you can't find one let me know and I'll find a link. The Martha steqert little four tier green houses are usually under 30 bucks... I put my 6 quart shoe box grows in there for now. 😎  Humidity controllers on ebay

personally I'd say keep trying on dialing in your tubs

the reason hardly anyone uses humidifiers is because better, simpler methods have been discovered.
there has to be a sweet spot between too dry and too wet.
keep aiming for that I'd say
humidity is important, but not as much as FAE as I understand things

best of luck!

👍👍👍 thanks. I'm still on the cakes for now but planning to do tubs with more experience.

However I've just hit a snag. The humidifier I was planning on buying is actually an ultrasonic and I can't see anywhere does the correct type of evaporative humidifier. Curses.

May have to abandon the humidifier. But I like the sound of that hydro stat. Thinking of that with a fan on a timer maybe.

However will it still need misted is the question?

so you've got cakes in an SGFC?

how's that made then? what's your room like?

Misting a tub once or twice a day is less work than brushing your teeth. cleaning and filling humidifiers and then having to clean the green house too is way more work and maintenance. If a sgfc seems like too much work than mushrooms will be too much work for you. The sgfc was invented for people who work 10-12 hour days plus travel plus having a life. It's damn near fully automatic you just mist once or twice a day and you can leave em alone for days on end if you need. Monotubs and bulk are even less work.

Fair enough if once or twice was enough but I've had to mist and fan loads in order to coax any fruits. Must be my conditions. The cakes were drying out in a sgfc with only 2 misting a day. Admittedly I have the wrong grade perlite but I have been unable to source the correct grade. The rest of the sgfc is built to a tee. 2" spaced holes on every side raised 6" off ground and near middle of room.

When I had cakes in a HC they took very little misting/fanning but contamed very easily.

I have experience with growing before and used to be able to get reasonable amounts using a heated propogator and numerous misting/fanning. I am just trying more conventional methods and really anything to see what is ideal for my conditions and has minimal work.

I suppose I should add my condition s are quite cold and lo humidity

Originally sgfc was designed to work in the mountains of Washington state where its cold as fuck and there's no humidity. Anything less than cold desert is better for them.

As feared I think it's the perlite throwing a spanner in the works. I don't think I'm getting the proper up flow from the bottom holes.
My latest cakes have now sat over 2 weeks in the sgfc with no sign of life. When some are reporting pinning times of less than a week you can see why I'm trying to mix things up.
Look don't get me wrong I'm not knocking the sgfc its an ingenious design and I wish it worked for me.

maybe your spawn was a bit contaminated which could slow things down?

I'm all up for trying new shit, but the sgfc has worked for so many people, you might just be a tweak (or new PC ) away from forests of lush fruits:jackiechanofapproval:

It's funny you say that keano I was asking about light spore prints recently and someone said it could be a contamination problem. I really hope not as im not sure where I can be more sterile. I use a pc and can get a couple flushes without problems and usually chuck the cake when it starts looking odd.

The only tweak I can think of to get the sgfc working for me is to create channels to each hole on the bottom side of the box thereby bypassing the fine perlite which blocks airflow. I was thinking straws pushed down through the perlite would allow the natural airflow to enter and rise from the bottom to fill the chamber as intended in the original design of the sgfc. Then I can use wet perlite/vermiculite as usual on the bottom in between the straws to raise the rh. Sound good?

sounds like it's worth exploring
you could also buy some new perlite

or try the tub method? I hope someoen chimes in as I thought I'd saved the TEK
but basically you get a shoebox or larger... put a load of wet coir in the bottom, or a wet towel, and then just flip the lid. that's it...
if I remember who it was I'll link it up

That's Mateah's Humidity Chamber.

Im about to experiment with it myself.

And yes OP, cool mists are old skool but would work for a Martha setup

The best way to check the proper moisture in a SGFC is with my hand. I can literally feel the moist air. Just takes some practice.

Yep have a humidity chamber going as per mateah. I got contams using it where I hadn't got before. Seems like it's working tho for a lot of people and is simple as hell. I'm still gonna keep trying it and dial it in. I think I just need a bit more fae.

Also I think that idea of straws in sgfc is like a cross between the two. As I prefer verm over perlite think it holds humidity better. And shotgun holes will provide fae instead of cracking the lid which will be kept firmly on

Interesting.

Im playing with an experimental idea of a partial SGFC/Humidity Chamber. Basically taking aspects of both, holes on the four sides for FAE (not all six like the original), lid open partially on top like the Humidity Chamber, but uses perlite since its sterile.

That could work. I found my Perlite dried out too easiy in sgfc. However with no holes in bottom you could saturate the perlite and nothing would drip out the bottom. It would retain plenty to fill the tub. The only thing I wonder tho is how airflow works in all these setups. I don't know enough myself but is it true co2 will lie at the bottom.
I am also experimenting with similar tub using heat source under the tub to drive the evaporation and airflow which in theory should force air up and out top holes and suck in fresh air at the sides. I still haven't found the optimum size tub Vs no. Of holes as I find I still need to fan/mist quite a bit.
