When in returns you to the desktop, press ctrl-alt-delete, click on anything that's in the window that pops up (do the 'not responding' ones first), and click on 'end task'. Then press ctrl-alt-delete again and click shut down ...repeat the process a million times or until it actually shuts down.

Here are two posible fixes

1)Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System tools, and then click System Information.

On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

On the General tab, click Advanced.

Click the Disable Fast Shutdown check box to select it, click OK, and then click OK again.

Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
Note: If you have 98SE this should be disable already by default but check it to make sure.

2)there's also a patch on microsofts update site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ called " Shutdown fix " I think it is only for 98SE but I could be wrong.

try these in the order they are in above.

Good Luck

I got the same problem, only it's all the time. (I posted about it in the "Lord Above" thread).

Yours sounds like a different problem than mine. But if it's the same problem, you're fucked. I'm going to have to format my hard drive sometime.

The really bitchy part is that it won't even restart when it tells me to, like when I install programs. Sigh.

My computer has a similar problem, I think. When I click shut down, about half of the time it gets stuck at the "please wait while the computer shuts down" screen. Ctrl+Alt+Delete has no effect, and none of the keys have any effect. It stays stuck on that screen until I push the switch to manually shut it down. Next time I use it, it works fine though, no scan disk needed. The computer originally had windows 95, and my friend replaced it with 98, and I never had the problem before going to 98. Any suggestions anyone?

You have a different problem then me. On mine, i just click the circle that says shutdown, then click ok, then it just goes back before i even pressed shutdown on my start bar popup.

Just an idea: always run ScanDisk from the OS itself. It helps alot if the frost came.
Duhh... Shitty OS. Miscrosoft is a General Erection Failure.
