I have to turn mine off. If i leave it on for more than 5 or 6 hours it gets unbearably slow. My guess is its my chip fan, it doesn't work too well. Its still under warrenty for another year, I'll take it in eventually.

Ythan and I leave our computers on full time unless we are activly working on them (or when we fuck them up)

Keeping your computer on is actualy the most efficient way to run it

I leave mine on 24/7. When I'm not doing something on it, it is looking for space boogers (seti)

Average computer uses 250 - 300 watts, that is 180 kwh per month. Where I live power costs $.10 / kwh so it costs me $18.00/month to run the "box" 24/7. If the monitor is on add another $9.00/month.

Windows 98 is a shitty OS for continuous operation. Many windows apps have memory leaks that will clog it up fairly fast. Win98 puters need to be rebooted every couple days. I have multiple disks on my 'puter and normally boot off the linux disk (red hat). Once you get set up on linux you won't ever go back, and you can become an opinionated prick like moi.

I used to leave it on 24/7, but the memory problems already mentioned with Windows 98 caused me to start turning it off.

However, now it won't shut down normally, so I'm leaving it on all the time and just restarting it when it gets slow.

So about twice a week now I shut it down for the night.

What do you people do to your poor computers? :P I've had my computer running (Windows 98 SE) for a month before and it performs beautifully, only reason it wasn't on longer was a power failure.

If you're having problems (memory leaks, slugishness, bad performance), try re-installing windows. You'll be amazed at how much garbage you can get rid of.

As a general rule I like to delete my \windows and \program files directories and re-install windows at least once a year.

After re-installing Windows, get the latest drivers and patches for your programs and hardware and you should be good to go...

Yeah it's a minor pain in the ass, but for me it's worth the 2 hours of work to have Windows actually be stable and not crash/lockup/puke on me.

Oh well, good luck :P

Oh yeah, I leave my computer on 24/7 also.

I have two hard drives so once in a while I move what I want to keep on one drive and re-format the other. I just get all the programs off the net again that I don't have the CD for.

I leave it on to my best ablities all the time, bit of course there are random reboots, crashes etc, or night when I just happen to turn it off, I also have a cable modem so I am idle on IRC and MSN Messanger and ICQ all the time...

I leave mine on 24/7. If I was useing 98 the night before I re-boot in the morning just to make sure it is stable (well as stable as 98 can be). NT runs fine for me with out daily re-boots.

Phyl: Yeah, NT used to take forever to shut down, now it takes about five seconds. I've fucked up the software beyond belief. It can no longer browse domains, etc. However, somehow, I've lost no functionality (since I just use it at home and not as an actual server.)

I also have a linux box I usually run 24/7. I love macs, but have found they don't take as well to running 24/7 and rebooting/shut down can do them a load of good.

Hehe ....
looks like everyone out here uses x86 based chipsets, i got a Sun MIcrosystems Ultra creator 3D from a friend of mine, and it is beautiful, I havent switched it off in 4 months, let alone trying to fuck with it, i am new to unix or rather in this case solaris, but I will learn, why do people have to support the monopolistic Microsoft, linux is a great way to go if you have a x86 based processor, no money no pain, and a mail to the list will ensure an answer withing mnutes if not hours !!
Peace,

maverick: I love linux for that, one message to the list, one post to the newsgroup or a little time on a channel and you get all the help you could ever get; and a lot more competant than any support you would ever get from microsoft or other corporations.
btw: It isn't supporting microsoft if you don't pay em

All 6 of my puters run 24/7 searching for SETI. Sometimes they serve up a little data.

My Sun Ultra 10 NEVER dies, so far its been 56 days without an issue and crunches 3 SETI packets to the 1 on the P2-450, God its nice to have a RISC processor

The X86 Linux box alos runs pretty much non-stop w/o trouble.

The 2 NT boxes need a good boot about every 28 days or so.

The 2 98 boxes need the boot about every 4-6 days.

It hought about switching over full time to the sun box or Linux, but I've gotten hooked on the multiple monitor support of 98. You don't know how handy it is to have 2 monitors on 1 puter till you try to do without for a day  Unfortunatly getting linux to do this is next to impossible. You can get 2 monitors running, but you cant drag stuff from one to the other, which I do daily....

Also having the 2 Smart-ups 900 helps to keep things up

Peace
