Re: I'm making fucking hotdogs for a living all of a sudden [Re: NOUS333]

No. I fucking love capitalism. The free market is an amazing asset to exploit.
I absolutely love what I do for work here.
And I have no desire to further isolate myself in these mountains. I'm actually moving closer to a small city in a couple months.

I came out here with the intentions of living off grid, but I very quickly learned after investing in land and actually starting to build a home, that living that way becomes your full time job. I gave it a shot and it wasn't for me as I enjoy working and can justify paying bills easily.

I did live in my camper for 4 months this past Spring  & Summer. Completely isolated in the National Forest, but not out of necessity. Just to minimize my life, humble myself a bit...A psychological vacation at one of the most beautiful places in the world is what it ended up being.

But like I said about living off grid, I've seen it successfully done by a few friends and quite a few acquaintances. And they regard it as one of the best decisions of their lives. If it's something you want to do, it's easily doable. If you rather work like myself, that's cool too.

mad to be saved,

Sorry, but you're just making excuses and want people to feel bad for you. If you live in Alberta then hitch, jump a train, or hike to a new city and make something for yourself, or just keep making hot dogs. I'm sure there are better jobs than hot dogs in your area anyways. Have you called every construction company in your area?

I always wanted to buy a hot dog stand and own a fleet of them. Those people bring in good money but being a cook doesnโ€™t sound fun.

Jesus... 34 fucking years!?... Fucking trooper right here!

I really can't see myself doing this as a career, god no.. The only thing I'm actually liking is the fact i'm not risking my life and limb for a paycheck lol, I even get to sit down once I awhile.

I don't hate my usual work, but holy shit it gets sketchy... We have a close call pretty much every day, if any of you reading this are or have been iron/steel workers, you'll know what I'm talking about...

Have you considered just leaving the workforce completely and living off grid?
It sounds like you're absolutely miserable every day revolving your life around a job you hate.  man...
For around $4-5k you could buy a decent parcel of land out there, as well as an older camper for a temporary home. It's something that has to be entrepreneurial of course. But when faced with nature as your only source of income, humans have an incredible ability to adapt. Not only feed themselves, but make money using the land.

i.e. Make the trek to near Banff since you're in Alberta, forage and sell gourmet mushrooms for a living. It's great money, and with bills only being propane and water in a camper, you can eventually save up to buy or build a home on your own land.

I say all this because I've seen friends successfully move to this lifestyle from 9-5 and restaurant jobs. It's just a matter of it being something that you really want to do with your life.

So you havent done any of this yourself?

I also have young kids bro, it's no longer 'welp, I'm just gonna strap on a backpack and hitch to bannf and start a new life by picking mushrooms... That was 20 years ago.

Lol, wow... Some people who don't have children

Its not that easy when you have 2 little girls, I'm not about to hop a train with my kids to get to greener pastures, it's really not that easy.

20 years ago I hopped trains, hitchhiked all over canada, all that fun stuff... Nowadays that's not exactly realistic for me, like at all...

And you don't think I was looking for other work before the hotdog place?... Give your head a shake man, if I had any other choice, I can tell you right now, I wouldn't be slingin fucking hotdogs to drunks.

I'm sure it won't last long, this is just to fill in the time until something better comes up.

I didn't wake up one day and be like "hey, you know what?, I want to sell hotdogs to drunks"

You're high. You really think going to a new city where you don't even have a place to sleep at night and somehow drumming up a job is even fucking possible? Not a good job at least.

More excuses. I'm not trying to be a dick, but you're in a dead end job with kids. That is even more reason to leave. The longer you stay making hot dogs, the harder it is going to be to find real work. Life is hard and even harder when you have kids. I know because I do have have a kid and a lot of other responsibilities.

I ended up in multiple dead end situations in my life and I moved to find work and get out of it. From All-over Michigan to Florida to California. You do what you have to do to survive. You have to compete and work multiple jobs for a little while if you have to.

Yeah, it's possible and just what you have to do sometimes. I have done it multiple times. There are plenty of good jobs out there if you're willing to put in the time and work hard. I started as an electrician's apprentice making $7 an hour and now I'm getting well over $100 an hour, but I had to move, work hard, and make sacrifices.

It was well worth it!

:yesnod:

wtf do you think I'm doing?

Sure I could just get up and go, but here's the thing... I don't live with their mother anymore, and I like to spend time with my kids, like as much as possible... If I move to the nearest 'city' which is about 3-4 hours away, which is Lethbridge, an absolute meth/fentynal ridden shithole right now, with very few job oppurtunities anyway, I'd never see my kids... We don't even have greyhound anymore.

You seem to think I can just get up and go, and things would get better... That's not really the case at this point in my life.

Again, this is a temporary situation, I'm even still technically employed at my steelwork gig, we just have nothing going on right now, I have no plans on leaving as of yet... my boss there is the tits, I love my co-workers and I get a very real satisfaction seeing a huge building that we ourselves built from the ground up where there wasn't one before.

I'm willing to wait for now... Yes this sucks, it really does... But, I'm doing what I have to do

Every ironworker since the history of ironwork has had to travel for work at one time or another. Ironworkers do not have the luxury of working 20 minutes from their homes most of the time.

That being said if I was inclined to climb around and weld for a living I could have five jobs this evening and more than that tomorrow with a few calls.

There is so much work going on right now the union does house calls on the weekends trying to recruit help.

I know quite a lot of real ironworkers and none of them would sit at home or go to work fixing hotdogs. :facepalm3:

WTF is up with all you people bashing this person for doing some work so he can spend time with his kids? Why the fuck is slinging food a bad thing? Who the fuck do you think you are people?

I'm someone who used to do ironwork myself and know the game.

You have to travel. Period.

Everyone has kids.

It would be like being in the Army and refusing to deploy because of the children, lol.

Maybe he likes the small break he's getting. Ironwork is pretty tough work I'm assuming. I always worked inside in bars and restaurants because I'm delicate.

I think it's more "tough love" than it is "bashing"...

Sure, maybe they could add some heart emojis or smiley faces in their posts...but I think everyone is ultimately just trying to let the OP know that cooking hot dogs might not be his ONLY option.

It is rough and a lot of them do take time off when they want.

You just can't cry about it because they're not knocking down the house next door and building a skyscraper so you can be at home for lunch every day.

Take some time with the kids. Sling some hotdogs at the local bar. But don't cry about there not being any work because that isn't true.

Yep, but you gotta realize we're nowhere near a megopolis like the east/west coast america... Skyscapers and industrial buildings aren't exactly things people are building right now around these parts.

The travel/accomodation costs from where we are would be a bit much.... That and I can't cross the border because I have a criminal record.

Look guys, I live in rural alberta canada, we do stuff all over alberta which is the size of like 5 of your 'states' yet for the most part it's uninhabited... We have 2 real cities, edmonton and calgary... The rest are small little farming and/or bedroom communities which are pretty far apart and are basically dead when it comes to job opportunities.

I posted this thread to get a laugh really, I had no idea it was gonna go this way... I was not looking for sympmathy, at all... I wanted to have a good laugh and give mad respect to the people who've been doing something I personally hate, who are serving us drinks, cooking us food, and scrubbing the toilets after we leave.

Seriously, thank all you peeps doing these shitty min wage jobs I don't like... If you fuck up my burger, it's okay, I wont even get mad, I get it now... It's a lot more stressful than you get credit for.
