Well now I have pins on the top of the substrate and growing from the sides. I know you’re not supposed to fuck around with them a lot but do you think I should try to get it out of the shoebox and let the pins on the sides grow freely?

Tacodude - That is not true for a shoebox. They are designed in such a way that they have air flow going threw them with the lid shut.

I wouldn't touch it if I were you. Leave it in there and let it do its thingm. Honestly with all the bacteria I would start a new project if u haven't already. Just let it be the side pins will grow to full size either way.

Good work!  Now...

Just be patient. The mushrooms are living organisms, they want to grow as much as you want them to grow. Just give them what they need and then let them do their thing.  Do NOT move the sub.

Well then you have airflow in that closed shoebox, but a closed plastic bin will not breathe if closed and must be opened.

If it doesn’t have a gasket, it’s not air tight.

If you get a plastic tub with a rubber ring around the lip and a latch, sure, but it is going to say “waterproof” on it, likely overpriced, and found at Bass Pro.

The lids for the cheap Dollar Store totes are typically so warped that they don’t fit period, much less with a hermetic seal.

You might have airflow, but it would be extremely resistant depending on how new the container is and if someone does make an effort to seal it. One might not need to open it daily, but I'm sure it would benefit to breathe it every once in a while... speaking of time to breathe my hooch I don't plan to drink
