if you can maintain your temp at 84 deg.. (thi is ideal) you might be able to speed up colonization. then when they are done throw them suckers into the fridge for a couple of hours. keep them in the dark.. check them fir pins. then case with moist vermiculite only.. you might be pushing it... but i think you might make it for the trip------------------ To see the light is not enough.. brainnoise

My friend was under the same sort of circumstances, and was worried about having enough to dose in a short period of time. My suggestion to you would be this... Case half, and the other half just leave as cakes. The cakes come on quicker, and then what you have fruiting, you pick. This means EVERYTHING. Pins and all. This might seem a waste, but it will do in a pinch, and better thatn going dry. As well, my friend noticed no ill effects from early harvest, they fruited again just fine. Then case the remaining cakes if you desire. The pins are very potent...

Easiest casing method is straight vermiculite. If you want to get fancy, get something like Jiffy Mix from Walmart. Either way you should be able to use these casings without pasturization or sterilization. If it's your first time casing I wouldn't bother with ratios and stuff. Just get down to the nitty gritty. As far as how many cakes you use, I wouldn't case all 12 together, even if you have a container that large. I would break them up into 2 cakes per container. Put the two cakes in a ziplock baggie, crumble into pea-size chunks and drop them into your container. Maybe put a layer of vermiculite on the bottom or something, some people say that's not necessary. You don't want to case a huge container and then have it get contaminiated or something, then you're shit out of luck. With smaller containers you don't end up putting all your eggs in one basket. Also, when selecting containers, go for something dark so light doesn't shine in the bottom or sides and cause subterrainian fruiting, that tends to get bothersome. Make sure your substrate layer is around 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches thick. Well, that's all I can think of right now. Ramble, ramble. ------------------ -snarf

Moist, yes. I think it's described as squeezing the mixture and if a few drops of water come out it's the right dampness. To speed up the casing, keep in a warm dark place covered until the white strings start poking through. Then put them in the light and fan about 5-10 times a day, misting the area (not the casing directly) if things look too dry. Should have pins in a week after putting them in a lighted terrarium of some sort. Don't want to much humidity but airing out is most important to prevent contamination, contams love stagnant air and overly moist casing layers. Ecetera, ecetera...------------------ -snarf
