Gypsum powder?
    #25868991 -

Hello everyone,

So i've been getting all my materials ready to start my first shoebox tek. I got a 10 pound coir block which ill have to hack a part and weigh the peices accordingly. I have more than enough verm. But I was advised to get some Gypsum. (I live in Japan) so I went to the store and got "gypsum powder" but is this correct? You use this stuff kind of like a plaster when mixed with water? (Sorry for my limited knowledge but I thought gypsum was like a plant food but when googling it all looks the same) just wanted to check in here to make sure. Thank you for your help

Gypsum is a mineral. It prevents caking and adds calcium and sulfer.

You have the correct gypsum, it is probably in there but there might be some other stuff as well. You need Calcium Sulfate, to be precise.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gypsum

The stuff for plants is not what you need.

Maybe you don't need gypsum at all though.

Thank you very much! Yeah I was told coir and verm is all you need (besides spawn) but gypsum or coffee grounds etc etc helps. I like to keep things simple but was told gypsums a big plus.

I have it too but not yet used it. Will have to try and see if it does the trick!

That's not the correct gypsum in it's current form. But, you can hydrate it, let it dry, crush it and you'll have the correct gypsum.

Although, it might also work in that form. Let's wait for a TC to comment on that.

poisoned is right, but DjKimZ can just add it directly to the water he will be using to hydrate his coir, and stir it up well.

DjKimZ mix it in well in your water, adding it slowly.

Would it also work for grains? I have some unused plaster at home that I could put to use. And I don't want to fuck around with rehydrating and drying it.

Im skeptical honestly, maybe just try my first shoebox with coir verm and spawn to be safe?
