Seems like it would. It's just gypsum that has been heated and dried out, and reconstituted. Kind of like orange juice from concentrate.

Got mine last week at Menards back in the garden supply. 40lb for $3.60. It was pellets, so had to do a little grinding.

a simple search of "plaster of paris" yielded me many hits, all of which said "DO NOT USE PLASTER OF PARIS"

Bag and a hammer works pretty good.

After a thorough search, all I saw that was negative was a bunch of bullshit about how it causes cancer. Most were of successful grows. It's just heated gypsum with a few inert binding agents, plain and simple.
Quit telling someone it won't work unless you've tried it yourself. Plenty of people have had success with PoP.

no need to be so hostile. when i searched i noticed that both RR and monstermitch recommended against using plaster of paris due to the fact that when it sets it forms a cast-like bind on the substrate. if he wants to experiment with that and try it, good for him. but if it were me, i'd like to know all of the facts. and knowing that RR and monstermitch recommend against it, i'd probably continue searching for gypsum.

Understandable. I'm in no way implying that it's the best choice.
All I'm saying is if that's all he has access to, it might be better than nothing.
Many people, including myself, have had plenty of successful grows using no calcium sulphate at all. It is a luxury, not a necessity.

Gypsum mines.. we've got lots of them around these parts. When I was in Cub Scouts, we used to go down into the mines for our outings. LOTS of gypsum down there! I just saw a big piece of it the other day in someone's front yard today when I was out delivering newspapers. It has a pinkish tint to it. Brew making supply shops will carry it, otherwise just punch a hole in your drywall.

If you want free gypsum just stop by lowes or home depot. (I actually work at lowes) They use these little strips of drywall glued together to stack the larger bunks of drywall on top of eachother. We have dozens of them lying around. They just get thrown away anyway.

Don't use plaster of paris, and it has nothing to do with cancer. The purpose of gypsum is to help keep the material nice and loose. You don't want anything that binds or causes clumping. RR

If you use plaster of paris you should have to mix it with water and let is set, so it becomes the fully hydrated form of calcium sulphate, which is gypsum. (plaster of paris is the hemihydrate form.). Then you will have to break the set plaster of paris into a powder to use it.
The way plaster of paris works is that when you wet it it turns into gypsum but crystallizes into a very hard form.
