I just found the pictures of what my Polyfill looked like last year:





It was weird because I had a good humidity level going (which has always been hard for me with monotubs), but got VERY little yield and also got a lot of bacterial infections. I know from experience that FAE exchange is one of the most important steps of fruiting, but I may have choked my bins last year, idk. 

I look forward to hearing opinions on this :smile:

I've been using micropore tape layers since I started growing again. Seen it around a lot now so I tried it out and I like the convenience of just peeling a layer or two off if I need to reduce humidity or increase FAE. I start with 3 layers bottom 4 holes and 2 layers top holes (my holes are 1.5" and some 2" so I have to put 3 strips of micropore together for each layer) and adjust as needed. Some tubs once fruiting I have been leaving the top 2 holes mostly open and that's been working good too, with 1 layer on the bottom 4 holes


I bought two boxes of micropore tape....48 rolls :lol:

I like that idea, but how do you peel one layer of micropore tape off without peeling off all of the other layers underneath?

Try alternating layers horizontally and vertically, so it's only partially overlapping (at the hole).

I actually did a weird version of this before: taking a paper towel and separating it into two pieces then taping them on the holes.

I’ll just wait to see, after I’ve got the bins constructed, and then get opinions from you - the experts here.

So I have the Amazon and Golden Teachers’ in their bins and bagged up, now waiting 10 days for the substrate to become completely colonized. I started by washing the bins with soap and water, rinsing then cleaning with isopropyl alcohol then rinsing again. After that, mixing the coir / verm and spawn mix per Damion5050’s coir tek. My 2 foot drill mixer worked great. Next time I’m going to use my corded drill and not my cordless.

I thought it was funny how the lids inflated like an inch after the boiling water was added.

Here’s an update on my other jars / strains. All jars that were inoculated have growth, and still no contams to date with the Oven Tek inoculation, as always. :smile:

looking good man. careful not to break your wrist using the corded drill. i do it to but you have to take care. also, there is no need to rinse your tubs after using iso. technically you'll only get them dirtier. I assume you were just trying to get the alcohol out but if you just give it a few minutes it'll evaporate.

Yea I was just trying to get the alcohol out of the bin - but thanks for the tip, that makes sense about the evaporation.

I find it odd that most teks out there don’t mention sterilizing your bin. I feel like this is a very important step that should never be overlooked.

Again thanks for following me on this thread. I’m very optimistic about this grow. I’ve changed a couple of things so far based on new research and your input and probably have a couple changes to come...

I just wash my bins and polyfill in between use. Regular soap and water :shrug:

sterilizing bins is not a thing. Iso sanitizes at best. I still have yet to determine whether it's worth the effort to meticulously clean tubs. I've done a few tests with just rinsing the casually and they've done fine but i still feel better about a soapy water scrub, clean water rinse, let dry, store until needed, clean with iso, let evaporate and spawn. that's my go to

I’m hoping to re-use these tubs in the future (or at least the lids) because of the amount of effort put into them.

I’ve tried to re-use tubs before, but maybe I was too anxious and thinking that the tubs - after becoming old and contaminated over time - were adding to my increasing bacterial contams that I keep getting, even after sterilization. It sounds like you guys re-use your tubs?

Just trying to keep them as clean as possible for as long as possible. :smile:

Everyone reuses tubs. Bacteria is coming from ur grain or overly wet substrate

I guess throughout the years I’ve been experimenting and I’ve been trying to figure out the best size tub and process for me. I would easily bet I spend at least $100 per year on new items for my different grows and processes. Ive been trying to get organized recently and and last night I made myself box up all of my unused jars, lids, filters, electrical switches, cables, timers, lights, temperature gauges, and an air pump. I’m probably missing something and thinking about having a garage sale lmao :mushroom2:

I’ve never had good luck with clear tubs, larger bins and have had mediocre results with small bins (shoeboxes and dub tubs), but always seem to get some good stuff out of medium sized tubs.

It would be very nice to find a method and stick with what works, instead of experimenting and finding things that don’t work each year.

All u need to follow is a grain prep method for spawn and the bucket tek for coir. Then just dump it all in a tub and leave it for a few weeks.

When we grow mushrooms inside the conditions are now different. There is no special niche for them to get ahead or hold the upper hand against competition. This is where things get difficult for many people.

People often seem to think contamination is a direct battle between the target mushroom and the invading organism. They worry about "contamination resistance." They think of ways to help the mycelium "get ahead". The fact is that this type of thinking is reactionary and incorrect. The mycelium is already pretty contam resistant. As resistant as it can be given its species and position in the food chain. Remember it grows outside amongst loads of contams.

What we need to remember is that contams do not usually attack the mushrooms directly. With the exception of a few species, most contamination is trying to get started on uncolonized material. If the all the available food sources are already held by the mushroom mycelium, fungal spores will have nothing to germinate on. If the spores can't germinate they are harmless.

Once mold mycelium or other contams get a foothold in the uncolonized media they are nearly impossible to to stop at that point. Cutting out molds is very risky because it spread mold mycelium fragments which in some cases can attack the mushroom mycelium directly. The most vulnerable media is the high nutrition grains that we use as spawn.


Bold/Italics mine for emphasis. What this means is to back up what nube is saying. The bacteria was present from when the highly nutritious grains were available to be colonized.

And, yeah, you're very much over-complicating this in my opinion. I know you used to grow, but things have updated a bit. I consider Bodhi's teks to be the best out there for removing vectors for contamination by using KISS methodology. They are not "for beginners", they're best practices.

You’re right ShaperDreaming. I guess after all of those words what I mean is: I’m trying to simplify my process - my only challenge is that because of circumstances beyond my control, over the past few years I haven’t actually grown the product at my place; that is always done at a friends house. That means I don’t get to pay as much attention to them that I used to be able to. I’ve been desperately searching for the best way to set and forget so that my “learning” friend can take care of them easily, but still make me happy.

If it weren’t for me wanting to in a way - pass the torch, it’s nearly impossible to just “teach” someone how to grow. Maybe if you were room mates but they only see the part/s of the process that they are involved in and see with their own eyes. It just takes months. I’m fairly sure my friend knows how to make DMT, because he was there for pretty much the whole process since it only takes a day to get it ready.

In that case I recommend this:

1: Prep Oats.
2: Agar to grain to colonize grain
3: When colonized, spawn with only coco coir into shoeboxes
4: Give shoeboxes to friend and have him let you know when they're ready to harvest.

It should be set-and-forget between each step, and especially after you have everything in a shoebox. For extra set-and-forget, add a top layer of coir that is 1/8"-1/4" that is at field capacity, then give it a spray down to satuarte it a little. This will get it through at least the first flush.

Benefits: very little steps, very few contamination points, if things get contaminated you don't have all your eggs in one basket, and it's about as set and forget as you can get.
