Oh it would for sure! It's just my mood problems begin to raise their ugly head again if I leave it too long between trips.

I'll give it a go. See if I can make the three week mark without wanting to blow my brains out ๐Ÿ˜‚

Yeah, I legit wonder. I feel like tripping every two weeks is a good schedule, and with shrooms I feel fully recharged. However, 5 grams of B+ gets me close to where you get with 10 grams of PE. So I'm legit curious as to whether the difference is residual tolerance from all your big dose sessions close together before, or if it's more of an individual sensitivity thing.

Also I wonder if all the diet and exercise stuff you are doing might increase your serotonin receptors, increasing sensitivity. And for myself, not always, but sometimes I feel like I can get further on less, like you get good at surrendering to the experience or something. If everything kicks in at once and you might be like, holy shit!

That high of a dose is not necessary.  I have experienced what i would call ego death and could not let go and it was a bad time as many others have stated.  I couldn't imagine doing a high dose and going thru that

Everybody has different baseline tolerances.  For a good reset 2 weeks is really pretty adequate although YMMV as usual.

As MV said : "To paraphrase Thomas Aquinas: โ€œFor those who understand, no explanation is necessary; for those who don't understand, no explanation is possible."

Also observe that: "(And notice that) when one says "I have no self," the sentence assumes a self that doesn't have a self"

Likewise the desire for ego death implies that you wish to later recover from this experience and then add the experience to your notion of who or what you are. Thus you actually hope to gain something, rather than let go...

Which is of course different from spiritual teachings having to do with "ego death".

But as far as words go, without understanding 'self', what meaning can its absence have?
Buddhism does not deny the self, but says we misperceive or misunderstand what "it" is.
We make 3 mistakes according to the traditional list.
If interested the info. is available in depth, for free on the web:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=buddhism+no+self&t=h_&ia=about

Beyond the Buddhist analysis there are psychological issues such as:
How do you know you are sane?
What would or could it mean: to Know you are insane?
And if that is the case, what does it mean as regards 'self'?

The hope, that one in search of such experiences has, is of course, first to surrender to a superior force, which is presumed to be benevolent, and thus avoid any effort, and secondly as stated above to actually get something--both of which presume that the current self is lacking something and that one understands & knows it thoroughly and correctly.

Most of these assumptions seem questionable to some extent.

Blind adult people who have their sight restored surgically can make no sense of the visual input their brains are suddenly subject to. Only chaos is 'perceived'.
Yogis strengthen the nervous system before raising kundalini.
Shamans* undergo long hard training and detoxification.
Haste makes waste.
And Buddhists study Dharma, or in the case of Zen undergo hard training with a master.

* "As for why it can't be shamen, it's because it's a word of non-English origin that was only brought into the language relatively recently. Grammatical exceptions are usually reserved for words of Celtic or Germanic origin that have been part of English for centuries (even millenia)."

But there is no "superior force" to surrender to - the surrender in tripping is to cease fighting the internal process, not to bow to some outside entity.

With the cessation of resistance towards dissolution of the "ego" (a resistance that arises in the ego's desire for self preservation) a far more comprehensive form of understanding attains full consciousness (if only briefly at first), so-called fundamental or original mind. This is significantly different from the idea that "ego death" is merely the temporary loss of sense of self.

Original mind doesn't just replace the ordinary self, it subsumes it and renders the latter superfluous. There is great freedom in this.

SFAIK this is all in consonance with Buddhist teaching, but like most of these things it makes little sense until actually experienced. Once experienced though it can't really be forgotten, since nothing else really compares.

โ€œBut there is no "superior force" to surrender to - the surrender in tripping is to cease fighting the internal process, not to bow to some outside entity. โ€œ

but as you already know:
(1) there R good trips & bad trips
and the hope is that, its a good trip.
And the hope is that, it will be a nice one;
so its not just one's own always guaranteed to be loving inner nature, that is being surrendered to...

(2) its not just your inner nature -- because a substance is being used to โ€˜contactโ€™ โ€˜itโ€™.
An outside factor, (which varies according to which substance) is chosen, to โ€˜mediateโ€™โ€ฆ

For example: compare trip reports of Salvia vs Mescaline.
        โ€” โ€” โ€” โ€” โ€” โ€” โ€” โ€”
โ€œOnce experienced though it can't really be forgotten, since nothing else really compares.โ€

Exactly ego returns, but now it potentially has another piece of baggage.

I am not arguing against the value of  psychedelic experiences. Just pointing out, that taking oneself so seriously, and the endeavor so seriously, that one misses the paradoxes, is sort of counter productive, & indeed an aspect of the whole problem of self.

Actually in modern times Alan Watts is ( I believe) the one who countered T. Learyโ€™s proselytizing, with a similar sentiment back in the 60โ€™s.
So the point is nothing new, and Trungpa Rinpoche also of course gets credit, for pointing out how sneaky spiritual materialism is, long ago in his book of that title.

Sure there are good and bad trips...

I've been to London, seen seven wonders I know to trip is just to fall

Ego doesn't necessarily return / it necessarily returns but it's changed / ego becomes less aggressively dominate / your perspective now includes previously unseen ways of being

Take your pick - the journey is made of many steps.

I wouldn't point to Alan Watts as a paragon though.  But if you're distinguishing spiritual materialism from genuine practice, yes it's an entirely different sort of affair.  :awesomenod:

However this idea of "it" - IME "it" has no trace of ego consciousness even though "it" exists, and has always existed.  "It" has no name, no defined location, pervades the universe.  When you surrender to "it" you lose yourself, that's the sort of surrender that matters - but since you already had "it" it can't be said it's an external force.  All sounds like paradox unless experienced directly.

:goodday:

"Ego doesn't necessarily return / it necessarily returns but it's changed / ego becomes less aggressively dominate / your perspective now includes previously unseen ways of being"

Maybe true, to some degree, in some cases. Of the millions who have tripped, and out of the tens of thousands of those who had some sort of ego death experience, I wonder how many, had their lives changed in the ways, you two wish were true?

Many hippies went on to become yuppies, and many just forgot the whole thing. And that's just a single obvious example that comes to mind, from years ago. I wonder if after a little reflection on the folks you've known over the years who tripped, there are any you know of who like Nisargadatta Maharaj can talk of and manifest convincingly a life where the illusion of the doer is gone? And indifference to physical pain is the norm.

We all agree psychedelics have value. But the evidence of about 55-60 years of use (of the stronger psychedelics) world wide, (by other than native peoples), does not seem to support the idealist notion of the results, we all wish were true. On the level of conventional reality, I think most would agree that if anything, the world is in worse shape than 70 years ago.

Myself, I don't care one way or the other.  I've often combined my tripping with meditation and I think you get a lot farther that way.  There's no way to know what somebody's internal experience is, which is why this whole discussion is so ambiguous.

Quote:

Again, internal experience of others is unknowable.  If you try to go by outward signs they can be misleading; hence spiritual materialism, and ego manifestations in supposed "enlightened" people.  It's all treacherous and there are no reliable guides.

From a spiritual perspective though, yes you can know and do (or not do) these things.  But that's a different question to what you were asking I think.

seems we have considerable areas of agreement

both meditation and tripping (as well as life) might be called journeys into the unknown

Psychedelics are a massive mystery. I've been trying to crack it's code for years and I st Ill can't tell if it's just me on other end or if it's an intelligent entity. Perhaps it's ME..the intelligent entity

I remember the first time smoking dmt ever. I tried fighting the dmt spirit because I felt so threatened because It was like someone invaded my home. I gave it a death stare while saying "fuck you, fight me" and it backed down and said "no no no it's not like that, chill" and I immediately felt like an ass. I was ignorant. Luckily it understood the error of my ways. Was it me being afraid of me? I don't know man..

Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

It's just a shot away..
