I've ordered this Astro 1 filter

I have spent hours trying to figure out which blower I need, and I am more confused than when I started. Can someone who understands the concept better than me link me a matching blower motor.

Do you have a box? Because that's just a filter. You need a filter a box and a fan of some kind.

Most people build their boxes from scratch, drop in a filter like the one you linked and bolt on a fan blowing perpendicular to the filter into an inclosed compartment so that the flow of air being forced out of the filter is a laminar flow.

You don't want the fan to blow into the filter, this will cause turbulence, what you want is to use the fan to create a pressure difference between the two sides of the filter so that the air moving through the filter moves through at the same speed over every inch of it.

Some quick Googling and I found that the ideal flow rate for a laminar flow hood is 0.5 m/s

0.5 x 0.372 (surface of your filter in meters) = 0.186 cubic meters per second of air flow. Using Google to convert to cubic feet per minute we come up with 394.14 CFM so we roughly need a 400CFM fan not accounting for the resistance of the filter.

I would gusetimate you need a 500cfm fan but someone more versed than me could answer more precisely.

As a side note, 0.5 mps is 1.1 mph most people can not even precive wind speed slower than about 4 mph.

Not hat fan is too weak for a 4sq ft filter. It only pushes 360cfm at 0.8" sp and that is it's maximum sp. You need 400 cfm at your filter sp plus your prefilter sp. Most prefilters are roughly 0.2" sp. I think I can read on that hepa box that the hepa filter is 0.8" but the res is too low to be sure.

gonna piggy back off this post and ask, is it fine that its almost 12 inches thick? most teks I read use 5 7/8 But I can't find many in that size online. So far thats what has stopped me from pulling the trigger on a couple of filters.

It's "fine" but ridiculous. It makes the flow hood just that much deeper taking up a lot of space.
