Re: Anyone use dollar store mini rounds for agar? [Re: Ziran]
    #25831368 -

I will see if I can post a pic, f-ing forum noob lol.

I use the same mini 1oz containers the OP posted. I am actually doing an agar run tomorrow in them.

To answer your original question, yes, I have had a few melt at the bottom in a couple full runs of these (around 50, stacked 7 high and think I got 7 or 8 collums) in a 23qt pressure cooker at 15psi. I stopped PCing for more than 15 minutes and got many less melting.

One thing I will note is I did not have and am ordering parafilm. It breathes but prevents drying out and helps keep these pesky lids on.

Aha! Figured out the link! Here is my drawer of Dollar tree petris that are about to be tomorrows fun.

Also, here is some of my last year's Dollar tree petris run.

As you can see, I tried to mimic the pasty plate tek with a couple brands of micropore tape on lid holes, big and small and even some Side holes. To my dismay, the lids allow plenty enough GE alone and any holes just dry out out my plates faster - please also note the humidifier I had to add to keep holey plates from crisping up😉

I'd personally recommend simply no modifications at all and sealing with parafilm like we all should be with any petri (contams love seams and gaps, no?)

I’ll try some in modded.
I never add parafilm as Long as you don’t handle them to badly. I just let mine sit out in open air no contamination.  U should try leaving one without parafilm just sitting out. As a control to see what happens.

Hoob, if you look closely at all of the pics I posted, I still have yet to use any sort of parafilm. With that said, Parafilm will be my next mycological purchase.

I was just suggesting it since I have made a few runs with them and know what to expect from my clumsy self... just wait until you grab a stack and a lid slips off and you drop an entire batch of genetics like I did several times and knowing $5 would have saved me... Or someone like me 😉

Ok I tried to PC this round with stacks of 2 for 15min. It has been almost a year and I forgot about using aluminum foil for a sleeve 😥. Some popped, some sphered out and only one spilled.

I left 3 (far right) without PCing as a control, there was much less condensation.

I'm sorry to hijack your thread, I was hoping  this info could help someone who is looking to get into myco but like many of us, didn't have much money. How are your Dollar tree Petris coming along?

Don’t trip on stealing this thread your input goes perfect.
I went to buy some today actually to pc.
I was bummed when they didn’t have ANY left I even asked the worker.
Hell yeah mycology on a budget.really the priciest thing is the pc itself.
Got mine used. Only used it once to steam crab.
Paid 25$. It’s a big pressto.  I was super happy that day.

Canada has these betty crocker 100 or 125mL ones at Dollar Tree. Dunno if you guys would have that in the US

I've used them but I got paranoid about the seal so I started wrapping them in parafilm. I don't use them anymore since I started doing petri's but they definitely work, just might wanna wrap em.

I think it was 4 for $1

Most people do not wrap their no-pours, from what I can tell. I have not had any issues and never wrap them. Regular petris have wide gaps between the top and bottom components which can let in contaminants and let out moisture too quickly, if not wrapped. You don't really see that problem with the mini-round style.

MisterE, you need a vent hole (covered with a layer of two of MP tape) to ensure that gas can escape from the containers during sterilization. Check out Pasty's tek on no-pours. Also, you'd want to PC them more like 40-45 minutes

Here's a prepped round using the Betty Crocker containers from Dollar Tree. There are actually some Glad ones in there two, but you'll notice they're largely indistinguishable. I prefer the gas exchange port on the side near the top, as you do not need to use foil. Just fill them, stack them up in the PC, and let 'er rip.

Thanks Hoob and hell yeah on the presto!
I bought 2 Presto 27qts within a week of each other at value village last year... Big difference to go from 5 pint jars to 8-10qt jars at a time lol.

I get exactly what you mean with waste, but I see it as less a waste and more as a learning experience. An inexpensive one. I've spent maybe $15 on these mini rounds and squares total. They are cheaper than a case of petris (lowest price is on a case, $56/500=11.2¢) at 10¢ a peice {8.3¢ for the 12pk}... I do plan on moving up Petris in the near future, but just like you, I can't find them now. If I can't find any more of these, I'll have to step up to petris sooner than later.

Thank you kindly juniperus, I will definitely be doing that on my next batch with my last 20 new rounds. Also these are not the nicer glad type Betty crocker rounds, but doing agar work with them today made me realize they fit better than I recall.

Good eye on the filtered box fan. Well, about all it's good for was cooling things down and kicking up dust... When I started, I thought marketplace HEPA filters were the same as an actual HEPA. Don't waste time, basically it's a dust shroud lol. I did an agar jar in front of it and it had more contams than an open petri on the counter. After that I went back to a SAB. With that said, I will be using filters just like this for a pre filter when I build my LFH.

Lol, not my idea, Pasty even mentions it in his tek, but that it wasn't his idea. It's the only way I do them now, though.

Yeah, I did that with all my first 4 or so sets of mini-rounds, but eventually read that many people don't use the paper towel, so I stopped using one and it worked fine. Then tried the hole in the side and was able to stop using the foil too. Saves a lot of time and materials, which is nice

these are sweet too if youre doing mini-rounds.  "signature-home" its a safeway brand so thats the only place you can buy them.  However they need no modification,  they stack better,  they dont have the humidity build up issues as glad or ziplock mini-roubnds.  also the when I take the top off a mini round  even if I place the lid back as gently as possible  they often get stuck back on the round and need reopening PITA!

I've scoured the internet looking for a similar 1/4 pint pp5's with screw-tops or even these same ones with no luck.  used to use glads or masons for no pours but these re the shit!  I always transfer to petri's tho before I go to grain.  just easier for me to visually inspect each culture and I can let it grow out more while still leaving some room from the dish edges.

Mom is a bit of a saver.
She saved a bunch of those little plastic dishes that the mash potatoes come in at fast food restaurants.  They are a little big and have a ridge raised up in the center and so would use a lot of agar.  They do handle the pc though.  I did cornmeal paste in them and used suran wrap around the lid seam when I inoculated them.
They are big enough and you can see in them.  I used a screw driver and heated it up and punched a hole in the side and put polly fill in the hole.
It will have a place in the things I am doing since mom already saved them.
Cheers
gww
