Monotub plan
    #25793702 -

So I just broke up my spawn bag at like 70 percent mycelium dumb choice I know. Gonna wait till 100 percent colonized to mix it with a bag of miracle grow potting soil. I'm going to mix 3 lbs of spawn with 12 pounds of the miracle grow soil and I plan to mix I it in a 108 quart tub for a massive mushroom output. Are there any tips you could give me for holes on a 108 quart sterlite and pasterization for the miracle grow potting soil? As many tips as possible would be amazing😌 happy to be appart of the community explain away.

Do not use miracle grow soil.

I prepare coconut coir using the Elementary Coir Tek.

Just throw a brick in a bucket with 4 quarts of water and you've got a great substrate.

Mix your spawn with a 1:1 ratio and make sure your substrate is 3in/7cm deep

I'd go with coir. between three and four quarts to a brick. I do about 3.25 if i'm only using coir and just under four if i throw 2 quarts of verm in. Bucket tek it. I have tubs that size that i run with normal hole set up. that's two 1.5 inch holes, evenly spaced as to divide the side of the mono into thirds. i place these wholes about 4.25 inches high. One 1.5 inch hole per short side. I put these up top about three inches below the handles, dead center.

Also, Miracle Grow potting "soil" (it's mix, actually, it's not soil) is not even good for plants IMO and IME. Look at the ingredients and you'll see a wetting agent and plant food, neither of which are exactly suitable for mushrooms.

Also, coir is cheaper. ($6 for 21 qt expanded, vs $10 for 25 qt of the potting mix) Why would you pay more for something that's inferior?

It's certainly not ideal. It may work, but if it were me, I would return the potting mix and swing by petco's reptile section for some coir. You will likely be disappointed if you choose to use non-ideal substrate. I wouldn't dissuade you if you if this was just an experiment and you had other things going, but if it's all you're planning on doing, it's not a good idea to put all your eggs in this shitty basket.

:whathesaid::whathesaid::whathesaid::whathesaid:

coir is super cheap man. Go out on the street corner and ask everybody you see what you have to do to raise ten bucks. You may not like it but it'll be over soon enough and you can go buy some coir. And while you are performing your street corner chore, you'd do well to meditate on the 6 P's of success and how it is you ended up in this position in the first place.

Actually. Miracle grow potting soil is coir guys. Look at the bag. MG moisture control is the best one to use tho. This is cased with MG cactus soil. They're pans tho.

It will work if u pasturize it at field capacity. Mushrooms don't care about plant food. They don't use much of it. And if u look at some tc grows, some people add plant fertilizer.

Oh excuse me. The regular MG potting soil is peat moss. The moisture control is coir.

Well, it's part coir. Mostly peat & perlite

Edit: yessir! Yeah it's not like it won't work, just seems less than ideal :shrug:

Yea definitely not ideal. If only use it if I already had it and I was broke as fuck. I'm a coir advocate too lol.
