Can I leave my jars at a not-so-ideal temperature to start?
    #4651134 - 09/12/05 06:22 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I'm going on an outing for a few days, and I'd like to initiate my mushroom growing right before. I plan to leave them in the dark, in a mildly humid (far from the ideal humidity for incubation) room for the days I'm gone. When I come back, I have two rubbermaids and a fishtank heater ready, but I'm concerned about not starting them off with the ideal. I don't think it will be a problem from what I've read, but what do you guys think?

they might stall to, since there would be no air exchange

I plan to use tyvek--won't that be enough?

How can I give them fresh air during incubation? I'm using the PF-tek with tyvek and a fish-bubbler incubation chamber. The PF-tek for simple minds simply says to throw a blanket over the incubator and let the jars colonize...

Heh. I'll be more descriptive next time (I usually am). What exactly do you mean by "growing" in this case? I know the PF-tek is not one of the most effective methods out there, and I plan to get more advanced after my first grow, but at the moment, I just need some mushrooms!

I've been working on my first grow, I decided to start with grains, as they are more readily available in my area. I've found them to be quite easy.
Anyway, humidity of the room isn't a concern, but as others have stated, the lower temp may cause it to grow slowly, which would give contams more time to take hold. Just put them above the fridge or another appliance which will be running. I try to make it a point to leave for a day or two when I first start jars, so it doesn't seem like I'm staring at the jars as much, playing with them, turning them round and round looking and saying "Whoa, cool."
They should probably be ok, especially if your house is around 80 deg. But it's risky.
