Unmodified tubs pinning/fruiting in center, shiny bruised corners

Hey Everyone!

First I want to say that I’ve been lurking in these forums for years and you all are amazing! With your help I’ve succeeded (more or less) with PF Tek, dub tubs, and shoeboxes in a full-auto greenhouse.

I recently decided for a few reasons to switch to monotubs and followed Bodhisatta’s unBODified tub tek. I have three tubs of the same variety used in his tek—specifically the 32qt size. I started with a MS Ecuadorian syringe into wild birdseed jars with coir/verm as my bulk substrate (following Bodhisatta’s Coir tek) with no casing layer. My fruiting space (basement closet) is kept at around 72°, 35-40% RH using a space heater on low and a humidifier, both about four feet from the tubs. Each tub has a 6500K CFL on a 12/12 timer sitting on the lid.

Per Bod’s suggestion I did not use liners and set the tubs directly into fruiting conditions with lids flipped upside down 24/7. Things were looking great until pinning became noticeable, at which point I began noticing the corners of the fully colonized substrate turning lightly blue. From what I’ve read this is most likely caused by insufficient moisture content (despite me misting twice per day), an assumption supported by my observation that the substrate surface never had visible condensation when I checked the tubs. So I began misting 3x per day, evenly spaced, misting from a couple feet above the substrate. Unfortunately the problem only worsened with time, and by the time mature fruits were developing, the light blue yet still fluffy-looking mycelium in the corners of the tubs had flattened out and looked shiny and sealed off. When I misted the water did not bead up in these areas but rather sort of pooled evenly across the surface? Pics attached. I’m just about to toss these (after pulling 6oz dry over 2 flushes from three tubs) and start fresh so any thoughts or guidance before I do would be extremely appreciated!

I've seen this same thing in my tubs before using the same tek. Two questions - what is your light source and where is it located?

I love the unmodified tubs for their simplicity. However, I've noticed quite a bit of variability in how the covers rest on the tubs and that leads to variations in evap. The largest gaps are right above the corners where they tend to blue up so that is my best guess so far.

Each tub has its own 6500K CFL inside one of those metal terrarium/workshop hemispherical clamp lights, which sit directly on the lid of each tub.

I’ve also noticed inconsistencies in the tub/lid interface... I was thinking resting the lights on the lid would help keep an even, flush connection between the two.

Interesting - that is the same lighting setup I have except I use a LED bulb. I tend to leave to light in the center of the lid. This could also be part of the problem.

Ahh, the weight might bow the edges of the lid out... yeah I hadn’t thought of that!

I’m getting the sense that drying out of the mycelium is the likeliest cause of these symptoms, as expected. But can you think of any other factors that could have the same effect? Bacteria or over-watering for example?

If you mean these kind of lights then I don't think its the weight. They are pretty light.

What I meant was that the light or heat gradient caused by placing the lamp in the middle of the lid might cause evap gradients. The pinning pattern mirrors the light gradient.

I think I'll try a more evenly distributed light for my next tub and see if that helps.

Yep those are the lights! Very interesting idea, an evaporation gradient. I can clip the lights to a shelf to suspend them about 5” above the lids. I’ll give that a shot with the next round! I appreciate your insight!

Make the lights further away next time. Also if you have corner issues mist the corners heavy every other day. I use floro tubes these days t8 6500k ones
