The Amanita Muscaria (Fly Agaric)
    #25768296 -

So, we all know of the fly agaric and that it's incredibly difficult to get to fruit because of the conditions that it requires. NOT just the proper temperatures and conditions but it also needs a mycorrhiza symbiotic relationship. Which means it needs a special relationship with a special tree in order to grow, Specifically for amanita muscaria to grow, it typically needs a pine or birch tree that will provide the proper nutrients and conditions that the Amanita needs. However, it has also been seen in nature to be growing near spruce, fir and even Cedar trees.

So, this being said, just simply attempting to inoculate a pine or birch chip substrate is NOT going to be enough to support the Amanita. I also am trying something harder here and instead of just throwing caps or spores by the trunk of a suitable tree growing outside, I'm going to be attempting all of this indoors. Now this obviously presents itself with its own problems like keeping the tree small enough for indoors but not so small that there arent enough nutes for the fruits of the Amanita.

Also, the Amanita is known to attract a type of contamination that includes a type of flying bug which lays it's eggs in the cap of the mushroom. Might just be fruit flies but i heard theyre more of a problem with this strain.

So, because im super curiois about this strain and its capabilities of growing only with specific trees, I plan on trying one or both a bonsai birch tree and or a dwarf evergreen or fir.

I have an honest feeling that this will actually work as long as the tree is healthy, my only question is, if it is a bonsai and amanitas do fruit, will they be scaled to size with the bonsai? And just leave me with little tiny fly Agaric's Or will I get nothing at all because of a lack of nutrients?

Im aware that there are some threads on this site that may mention this idea and or even other idea very similar to this but I wanted to create a brand new post with maybe a new idea or 2 from the latest, and greatest of what's known now in the world of mycology.

Please, if anybody has any advice, input, or ideas, please do tell.

Is anybody comfortable enough with their knowledgedge on this subject to give a helpful response? Or am i just going to have to experiment?

Aminita's mycorhizal relationship breaks down the tough root bark of these particular species of trees, making nutrients easier for the tree to take in, which in turn makes nutrition more readily available to the mycelium ... feed the tree, feed the culture... as long as there's ample nutrition in the soil, it should work  (given proper conditions) for typical sized fruit... also, a strain is a single set of genetics derived from isolation of a given variety, of a given species... i.e. aminita muscaria is the species name, you're not dealing with any one strain yet... I've read that aminita's are notoriously difficult to trip on, and specimen often cause a plethora of unsettling side effects... muscarine  (active in muacaria) is more readily available when it's been digested, so it's fairly common practice among enthusiasts to consume them,  and then drink their subsequent urine for a better trip... any particular reason you're interested in this particularly difficult and unpredictable species?

This is great feedback, I'm particularly interested in doing this species because I find it to just be a very beautiful yet almost cartoonish looking fruit which I heard was fsirly difficult to grow indoors so I also was looking to take on the challenge and be successful so i can add a special type of grow under my belt. Defitinely not interested in the whole urine thing lol but I heard of people just eating or even smoking the caps of these and having exponential experiences compared to just regular psilocybin cinema is or other psliocin containing mushrooms.

Higher doses eliminate the cinematic features of a typical psilocybin experience... exponentially when brewed lol... good luck!

What exactly do you mean by that? That theyre a lot more potent than just psilocybin? And yes brewing is the method i was thinking of.

Iโ€™ve taken amanita muscaria collected in the Colorado Rockies.  Seems to work best if dried and made into a tea.  Effect was slight inebriation.  Iโ€™ve heard specimens collected in North American donโ€™t work as well as their European/Asian counterparts.  Youโ€™ll likely never cultivate them.

I would love to be able to grow them just to watch it happen and enjoy the beauty but unfortunately that's not possible.

Yeah that's mainly why i want to do it is because of the beauty. Ive seen it done before, I mean as long as it has the relationship with a healthy tree I mean why wouldn't it fruit and be able to be cultivated? Its not like its some unknown occurring phenomenon that nobody can explain why it happens lol, it's not as simple as sticking it in a tub filled with woodchips but ive seen a few success stories with trees involved.

Amanita was a disgusting drug. It was like a mildly psychedelic flu that lasted for hours.

I'd rather be sober while waiting all day at the dmv.

Well here is just one story I found on this very website actually:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25508850

If you can mimic the environment in which it grows and provide the proper nutrients from the host tree, I really dont see it being impossible. Lol why does everyone act like it isnt doable just because they haven't ever done it? I mean, its common sense that if you provide the same habitat that its going to work fine, just like this guy did in his back yard. Funny thing is I've never even seen an indoor grow attempt to the likes of what I'm talking and thinking about doing, and I bet it would work as long as everything is just how it should be habitat wise. This isnt going to be like a monotub grow, I'm going to be attempting to get the fruits to pop out by the tree by cloning to the soil in which the tree is planted.

I had a feeling it might be something like what youre describing, which makes me more just want to experiment with the grow. But I found the tree that i think i will most likely be using for this. It is called a Blue Wonder Spruce and they dont get biggee than 6ft tall perfect for indoors size wise and its from the pine family which amanitas are likept to grow around.

But man inoculated the substrate intentionally before any amanitas were ever there :/ otherwise id say youre right. Its 2019 I think man can be successful with growing a type of fungus if we can clone human body parts and far more intrequete and complicated things like stem cells  i think we can grow some fungus lol just my opinion.

I think if you clone the species and introduce the clone to the proper habitat mycelium networks will establish eventually leading to fruiting, yes. I dont see how thats far fetched at all considering its very similar to cloning a species or strain to a jar that you let cplonize and eventually spawn to the correct substrate...its the same principle.

I wish you the best of luck with this undertaking and also I'm curious about how this project turns out. Would be great if you succeed! Here in the Netherlands we can find them in the wild from october through december, when it gets cold. Usually on / under berch trees. I did try some of the cap of a wild specimen once, but I was probably too careful. Didn't really notice any real effect then.
