Anyone Grow Amanita Muscaria?
    #1505154 - 04/29/03 06:13 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hey all,
Just curious if anybody out there grows or has grown amanita muscaria (fly agaric)? I am interested in learning more of how to grow and possibly find these mushrooms if my area is right for them. If anybody could help me out it would be much appreciated.

I have not read any reports of successful cultivation of them. They have to have a living tree (can't remeber what kind) present, which is hard to do indoors.

Short answer, no, you can't grow them.

You could theoretically grow them, but it would have to be outdoors. They have a mychorizal (spelling???) relationship with evergreen trees such as Pine, Fir, Spuce, etc.. There are places to get spore prints of this species. Look around and I'm sure you'll find them. I think I know of one in particular. PM me and I'll tell you.

I'm not real sure how successful any type of cultivation might be. I've never heard of it being done. Good Luck if you try.

'Mycorrhizal' fungi such as Amanita muscuria are extremely difficult to grow. Although their mycelium is relatively easy to cultivate on agar, they cannot be made to produce basidiocarps without the aid of a host plant.
Fly agaric are ectomycorrhizal fungi and although they are believed to only gain carbohydates and simple sugars from the host plant they are yet to be grown 'in vitro' and it is unknown why they only form symbiotic relationships with certain species of tree.
Amanita muscaria are limited to a few species of pine and silver birch. Simply placing their spores near to a host plant has very very little chance of success.
Rather a seedling would have to grown in aseptic conditions in soil or hydroponics and then infected with mycelium, which would hopefully form an ectomycorrhizal mantle around the host plants roots, which will require a high level of laboratory skill and research.
So the answer you looking for is probably NO, you can't cultivate them.

There has to be some enzyme or other biochemical present in the tree that coaxes the mycelium to fruit - a trigger of sorts. Not much research has been done on this particular species, but I'm assuming this is the case (of course, there is a great possibility I am wrong).

I'm sure if there was someone willing enough to donate some time to these mushrooms, a tek could be created for indoor cultivation. Of course, only a die-hard agaric fan would attempt such a feat, and IMO fly agaric is a much more uncomfortable experience than our little blueing friends.. (ie profuse sweating/salivating, vomiting, urinating).

A side note - be careful if you try these mushrooms, they ARE toxic but safe so long as you don't overdose.. Just keep in mind that it IS possible to overdose (much easier than it is to do with cubies), and the toxins can build up in your system rapidly.

another side note - ancient users of this mushroom used to consume their own urine in order to extend their 'healing/psychic powers' because your urine is full of the active chemical(s) after consumption.

what's the lethal dose for Amanita Muscaria? I don't know if I have the balls for that kind of trip.

I think that the Amanita muscaria trip is beautiful. Its very different from our blueing friends but is safe, to overdose you would have to eat a huge amount.
Their mycelium does contain active compounds but in weaker amounts, however transfer to a larger substrate i.e. grain has proved un succesfull, well for me and anyway.

So how about finding them, lets say I know a gorilla that lives in north central illinois near a river. What would be the chances of him finding amanita's or any trippy mushroom? And if they are around how could he find them? Thanks for the help.
