It is not hard on the hands. Cakes aren't that hard either. Box graters grate potatoes and carrots no problem. Yeah, the myc has to recover but that happens any time you break it up. Spreading it out more doesn't cause contams, it causes faster colonization which reduces risk of contams.

nice Jerry hand avatar. Well just have to agree to disagree. Based on personal experience, it was very hard on my hands using a grater (maybe it was my particular grater but the tight holding on a continuously shrinking piece of myc cake made my hands cramp/sore. After 15 half pint cakes I was done. And my shoeboxes that I grated took longer to recolonize than the one i Just broke into chunks...

Hi mate. Keep in mind, you will fail, but you will also have success. Those failures are learning tools!
Don't give up because you get mold. Try different teks til you find one that works for you. Never give up!

You will want to do it as soon as possible. Because the moisture content in the jars may get altered.

They will be fine tho. I would recommend 2 hrs on ur pc tho. Just to be sure.

I often make jars of grain and then, after pc-ing, I keep the foil over the lid and close them up in a monotub sized bin. I use them within about 5-7 days, and as far as I can tell have had no problems waiting that long after sterilization. I've been rolling this way for about 6-7 months, and will likely continue to do so until I see a reason to change, as I don't have a large amount of space, and often have to do work in slow phases.

Question, after inoculation...Do I put anything of the holes of the BRF cake jars?

You can tape with micropore tape as an extra precaution, but the dry verm layer  (which should go to the rim of the jar and be slightly compressed by the lid, holding it in place) acts as a filter to protect your cakes

How much are you willing to spend on a first attempt? That should answer your question.

PF Tek: ~$40 not including spores and assuming you already have a pot you can steam the jars in. Jars, BRF, verm, perlite, tub. Oven dehydrating or just consuming the low yield fresh with some friends

Bulk: ~$160 again not including spores. Jars, grain, coir, filter material, PC, isopropyl alcohol, 1 tub (use it as your SAB for grain inoculation before using it as your mono), and dehydrator. Add the cost of a blade, petri dishes, agar, and a full time SAB tub if you want to add that in. ~$40-50

Super basic pricing for new equipment and I could be forgetting something.

Time available matters, too. Bulk will require more of it, but not a ton. Always keep in mind discretion, as well. If you tend to have people over, you'll want to keep your grow well hidden and preferably under lock and key which might require purchasing a locking door knob or dead bolt. A light and timer are very nice as well.

I started with PF Tek and learned a lot from it. Mostly that I could do it, but also that grain, agar and bulk subs are so much more fun. If I had the teks that are available here now back then I doubt I would have bothered with PF, but I was obsessed and determined
