First Time Tryer Here

So, I have been reading through this site and reddit thoroughly for over a month and feel it's time to take a stab at it. I was originally planning on doing the BRF tek and going that route, but after reading through all of bod's teks, I am now thinking maybe the oats way would be the easiest. My question is, being a noob, what makes the most sense for a first time grow? I know a lot of that question is subjective, but I want to make my first time simple, quick and easy to kind of learn and understand the stages before delving deeper.

P.S. Thanks bod for the vast amount of tek and information, it truly has helped.

If you want to do bulk, I would say the most learning with the lowest investment would easily be BRF shredded to bulk. So, follow PF tek until you have a colonized cake, then pick your tek to follow. I recommend Bod's shoebox tek. 1qt brf shredded into a shoebox, 2qt coco coir added (use Bod's bucket tek), mix it together in a shoebox, then add a small thin 1/4" layer of pure coir on top. Can't get much easier, and it has the lowest chance of early contams. Once you got this move on up to oats/grains.

Forget cakes. Just get a used PC, a bag of oats(~$15), agar, petris, jars, and a SAB. Start with agar and then oats. I have never considered cakes a practical starting point.

They have their place. Honestly they're great for beginners because they're easiest to sterilize, they don't offer a whole lot for contaminants to latch onto, and they're pretty forgiving if things stall.

The biggest advantage is that they don't require dropping about $100 with that list of supplies you just said. Even used, you're going to have a hard time spending less than $30 for the PC alone. You can buy all the supplies for BRF cakes for less than that, and it's a great learning tool.

But you couldn't pay me to go back to using it now. OK... you could pay me to I guess, I just wouldn't like it.

I reccomend PF Tek with a SGFC for beginners, however, if you don't want to fruit cakes then I would have to agree with ShaperDreaming.

You can shred your cakes into a bulk sub for a bigger yield.  My only extra advice would be to stay away from a monotub on you're first try or two.  Shoe boxes keep your grow separated incase one of the shoeboxes contaminates.  You can then just toss that single shoe box and keep the others growing.  If you try a monotub, then all your eggs are in one basket.  If the monotub contaminates you'll have to toss the entire tub.

PC(used or small)/30, oats/15, agar/1, petris/15, SAB/15. You could probably manage it all for $100 with a new presto 23.

This is what I'm thinking but I really wanted to keep it around 50 bucks just to start, I'd hate to invest and be unsuccessful or lose interest(doubtful). But can you inoculate grain jars with a liquid syringe?

For brf, I would do 4 half pints jars to a shoebox with 2 qts of coco coir?

Yes. However no one will recommend it. Syringes are inherently dirty, and unless you start on agar you're going to bring something along that's a contaminant. Will it affect your grain? Substrate? Who knows, but keep your eyes peeled to throw out anything that is contaminated, it's very likely to happen.

As a side note, it is LESS likely to happen with brf cakes because less grows on them that is a contaminate. If you're going to go far enough to get into grains, get into agar as well. That's my tip.

Do a 1:2 ratio. If you do 4 half pint jars of brf, do 4 pints of coir. That's likely a lot for a shoebox, so if you're doing half pints I'd do 2 of them with 2 pint of coir.

Dont use a cheese grater. Its hard on the hands and the cakes are hardier than you'd believe. Ive read some conflicting views on that also. It takes longer as the mycelium has to recover more and greater surface area exposed to air=greater chance for contam. Just break it up into chunks.

I have seen people say it both ways, so I may just try it both ways and see which works best. I should have enough for a few shoeboxes at least.

I'm in the midst of a somewhat successful first grow (PF tek). Total expenses (including 2 spore syringes) are on the order of $100.

Spore syringes - $50
Clear 66 qt tote for SAB - $15
Verm - $10
Jars - $15
Coir - $10

I had a tote to use as an FC, a light, and a big pot. I think you can get spore syringes cheaper from what I've read but I took spore prints so now shouldn't have to buy any more spores.

It is not hard on the hands. Cakes aren't that hard either. Box graters grate potatoes and carrots no problem. Yeah, the myc has to recover but that happens any time you break it up. Spreading it out more doesn't cause contams, it causes faster colonization which reduces risk of contams.
