Question about Potency

I grew some shrooms off spores I bought online for the first time about a year ago. I had limited success and managed to produce about an ounce and a half dried. I consumed them all over time, gradually upping the dose from about 3 grams getting all the way up to 8 grams on my last try. I certainly felt the effects and it was an enjoyable experience, but I definitely did not experience a full on "trip". A few months after I'd used the last of mine I had the opportunity to try some someone else had grown. These blew my mind. With only 3.5 grams I had the experience of my life. I'm ready to try growing again but I want to make sure I can get stronger ones this time. Is it the "strain" I bought? I bought one of the cheaper ones on the site so I'm sure that has something to do with it, it was called "Fiji". If a couple extra bucks makes that big of a difference I would happily spend it. I know I left out a bunch of information here, but I'm just not really sure what's relevant. Let me know if I neglected to mention something important.

Potency is always a weird one. Because like all ya gotta do is eat more if they're weak lol. But yeah I know how that goes.

8 grams and not getting a full trip? I don't know what causes that much potency lost. That's absurd lol.

Did you dry and store them correctly?

I used a food dehydrator and stored them in a mason jar. Choking down that much and not getting a full trip is pretty disappointing, I'm not sure I could stomach much more lol. Especially when I know that it's possible to get it with much less.

It helps with the taste if you cook them (taste just like regular cooked mushrooms), they actually don't lose much potency from cooking.

The consensus is that potency really depends on the substrain, the kind that you can get by repeatedly isolating mycelium on agar. Within each "named strain" (e.g. B+, Golden Teacher, Ecuador, etc.), there is a lot of genetic variation and, with it, variation in potency. So you should be caring about the nameless substrains within each strain, not the named strains per se.

The only known exception to this rule as far as I know is that Penis Envy tends to be more potent than other named strains.

All this is expressed in a popular saying that you can find if you do a search: "A cube is a cube [... except Penis Envy]."

Speaking of search, it's good etiquette use the search bar before asking questions so as to avoid filling the site with redundant questions. The question about strain potency has been asked and answered in many threads already.

Years ago my first go around with growing i made cakes. My thing was to eat the whole cake so that the mushroom gods could be in control of my dose. "I was young and lived in big sur so.." Anyway some times 30 grams wet would take me out of my body and sometimes 50 grams wouldn't even get me buzzed. I belive its just genetics or maybe its the mushroom gods fucking with you.

Were they still cracker dry? Had they been exposed to heat or sunlight?
