After you've grown a bunch and have knowledge, then read TMC. There's a few gold nuggets there. Especially the contamination section. The growing sections are all utter garbage though.

Pyrotek : Thank you for your recommendations ! Yes, broad simple procedures would be good to start. Maybe I could work towards more complex things later -- but would be nice to just be able to have a small crop to start.  I will check out Bodhisatta' s teks. Cheers for the good steer !

Doodlin : Thank you ! I'm glad to see my stupid question has some actual other application (:
I will certainly bear that in mind about dry heat for vermiculite or perlite if I need to do some non-standard sterilisation at some other point for some reason.
It did occur to me that this "flame jar" would work for sticking a variety of instruments in the jar , and to sterilise the jar itself. (:
A bunch of birds with one stone.
I was not aware that there may be water-sensitive instruments which would be better to sterilise with dry heat, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it... and now I know. Cheers !

If nobody says anything else, those links will give me plenty of reading for a long time !!!

It's been a loo-ong time since I've been part of any kind of educational forum or otherwise, and I forgot to check the stickies (on reading that , I just remembered "oh yeah, stickies, of course !!!"  --- Dumb, I know).

I'll make a point of going through stickies, and that should keep me plenty-busy.
It's at least the second time that somebody in this thread has made referenced bodhisatta's teks, so obviously they are held in regard, so I know where to go (:

Ok , that can go on the back-burner for a good-while, then.
"Free" is also a very nice price for information !!!
I'm buried in books as it is  /:          .....need less, not more.
.... Stamet's "Cultivator" can be found as a PDF tho ----- but good to know there are better and more recent methods which can be found in the stickies here  (:

.... and that I can save money and space for a while longer :P

There had to be a few good points about TMC given how much coverage Mr. Stamets has on the webs -- I'll give that contamination section a go , and avoid the growing bits.

Unless anybody has any other recommendations (always appreciated),
....  I think I've got HEEEAAPS to go on with now,
which should keep me plenty busy --
( and my dumb self forgot all about stickies !!!  So there's going to be a ton of those I should get thru. )

Thanks all for taking the time to share your thoughts and opinions , in spite of my dumb initial question --- but I'm still glad I asked.

It also saved me wasting time on reading materials which would not have been useful  --
and given me a sense of I should be placing time for the small first steps I want to take , and so I can actually generate a little bit of output (which would be nice), rather than floundering for ages with outdated info -- which I might otherwise have done.

.... and just dipping my toes in here and getting some direction has been great in letting me know what I should be pressing on with, and where to put my energy !!!

ANFO might be a good sterilizer. It is certainly a good cleaning agent, as the Mythbuster famously used it to clean the cement off of a cement truck.
