Buddhist Meditation

I am VERY interested in the buddhist teaching and meditiation. So what I need to know is what are some really good books for a beginner like me?

A great, great start would be Lama Surya Das's "Awakening The Buddha Within". He's a teacher from the tibetan lineage, but he's a westerner so you get the best of both worlds (the wisdom and the communication). If you're really interested, you can practice the Tibetan form of meditation and teachings known as Dzogchen which is basically the Buddhist's answer to the nondual teachings of hinduism's Advaita Vedanta.

If the Tibetan deal is a little too much, (you know, all the god's and monsters and stuff) you can try out Zen. In Zen, all they do is sit and meditate. Hours and hours. They're hardcore - goin' for it. Not wasting time with all the belief bullshit. All they want to know is EXACTLY WHAT MUST BE DONE TO GET OUT. Try Alan Watt's "The Wisdom of Insecurity".

Whatever form you chose (and of course there are many, many other forms), read some books and find a teacher to learn meditation!

Also if yo live in a big city there are huge chances that there is a temple somewhere. Most temple offer meditation courses, it's also usually the best way to have a strong basis.

The temple also brings you one of the three jewel ( the three being darma, sangha and buddha), the sangha meaning the spiritual community you take part of.

What you might also like to check out is some yoga... yoga is like stretching, working out, and meditating at the same time.  VERY relaxing and enlightening.

www.erowid.org has a lot of good information on buddhism and many other eastern religions.

i'd suggest reading some stuff on the Tao. it may not be straight-forward buddhist.. but it's good none the less.

Try the 3 pillars of Zen, excellent book in regards to what zen is, but also goes into good depth on how to practice yourself, its also geared for a western reader, and the best thing is the actual enlightenment accounts, descriptions of thier experiences and how it effected them. Awsome book, i gave my copy away, and that person is supposed to give it away when they are done with it. Oh and taoism stuff is very cool too, check it out.

Transform your Life by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

These are two excellent books which are very accessible to Western People.

The Dalai Lama's Ancient Wisdom, Modern World and Art of Happiness are also two great books which are immediately relevant to daily life and also introduce many of the key Buddhist concepts.

I agree wholeheartedly with ZenGecko.
The Three Pillars of Zen is an excellent guide to practice for the westerner, without filling your mind with distracting philosophies and mumbojumbo (you can master the mumbojumbo later :wink:) .  I've had it out from my library for months; I just keep renewing it.
