Perlite problem

hey guys...so far up until now i've had no problems with my first pf tek...i only have 4 jars right now..just wanted to test out the pf tek before i move to casings....but anyways for this grow i am using perlite in my grow chamber for humidification....it's in a small 10 gal tub...1/2 inch of water...about 1 2/3 inch of perlite...my hydrometer is reading nothing above 34%...
now either my hydrometer is broken or someone broke my perlite...as far as i know all holes in the container are taped and the seal on it is pretty solid...i dont know what im missing...my hydrometer was reading 74% when i took it in the bathroom with me while showering...74 seemed kinda low for all the steam in there...anyone know what im missing?

What is the temperture in your fruiting chamber?
-------------------- Butternut squash are softer than acorn or other types of squash, which makes them easier to cut and prepare.

Put it together and add all your perlite and stuff, and at the least have the water go half way up the depth of the perlite. Now when you add the water make sure it isn't ice cold or real cold you know what I mean. Lightly spray the inside of the chamber and then put the meter in and let it sit for like 12 hrs. Come back check the meter and tell us what it reads.

there are no droplets when i open it up...
magash...when you say have the perlite...should there be water coming out on the sides when i tilt the container? cause i tried it before and i added too much water the first time...it got too soggy and the rh still stayed around 30...my perlite supply is almost spent.

the trick is to get the perlite wet, drain off the xtra water in a colander and dump into the fruiting chamber. Use about 2-3 inches for a normal size chamber. there's no point in filling the chamber with water, as perlite doesn't evaporate when it's under water.

Ok, screw your hygrometer.
Make sure:
-Your fruiting chamber is clost to airtight .
-You have a couple inches or perlite on the bottom, and that your perlite isn't sloppy wet, just moist.
-After you leave it closed for a while, stick your face inside your chamber and breathe in, you should feel nice and moist air.
If you've got all that, plus steady temps, you should be fine.

What I do, besides the perlite, is mist the sides with water whenever I don't see many water droplets on the side. I also have the air pump/air stone in a glass milk bottle filled w/ H20 & peroxide (this helps with air exchange and humidity). I don't have a hydrometer, but whenever I open it up to mist/fan, it feels like a damned jungle in there. I would also suggest adding a little bit more water to the perlite, & mixing the perlite around a bit before leveling it out.
What I have found is the best sprayer for misting, is those bottles of "I can't believe it's not butter" spray. The mist is so fine, that it almost floats in the air, & I can see rainbows through the mist. Good luck

I think by now we can say your meter is garbage.

K, wait a sec, did you put the perlite in dry and just add the water to it? The perlite should have been soaked first. Then put it in.

Less then a hour. That meter is fucked up. (or you live in death valley and don't have a lid on the chamber)

I second the innacurate hygrometer hypothesis. get like 3 inches of well drained perlite in the bottom and spray down the sides. That has always done the trick for me. By the way you could test the hygrometer by wrapping up the probe in a hot wet towel. If it doesn't read over 95% then, well lets hope you kept the reciept.
