Perlite Problems

Right so heres the problem....
ive got a large rubbermaid bin with about 2in of perlite in it...
added some water.....
the bottem inch of perlite seems quite moist (i added alot of water)

but humidity only rises to about 90%... i still cant crank out that extra 5%

ive read a bunch of the faqs about perlite, and they all say add about 1/2 an inch of water.....
but the perlite seems to soak up the water...
do they mean, add enuff water to make the bottem 1/2 inch of perlite very damp? or should you actually SEE 1/2 inch of standing water under the wet perlite?

there is no standing water in my perlite... its just VERY VERY damp at the bottem 1/2 inch...
perhaps this is my problem?
i didnt want to add too much water since everyone says thats the worst thing you can do to perlite....

ive got to get my terraniums up to 98% humidity within a week or 2, ive got several jars that are around 95% complete

I agree with matts. Your hygrometer is probably not properly calibrated.

Hmmm well, i got PLENTY of surface area for the perlite.... and its ALL damp
so i suppose its my hygrometer...

i have the electronic radioshack kind...
cant calibrate it....
fuck....

on a side note, the instructions that came with the hygrometer says its +/- 7 at +80% humidity.. so basically its friggin useless :P....
it would still make me feel better if i could see a 95% humidity on it...

bah, my coolmist was probably working fine as well, but the damn humidity gauge wouldnt read above 92% so i switched to perlite + coolmist
(perlite for constant humidity, and coolmist for fresh air exchange.... ultra lazy man's setup)
