High Chief is referring to the ethanol/acetone casing tek. I have been experimenting with this method, and it seems that it is indeed effective in preventing the spread of green mold. However, my results have not been conclusive, and more experimentation needs to be done. I simply moisten the dry casing soil with a 2% acetone solution and allow it to incubate for five days in a plastic trash bag. It seems that this technique has tremendous potential, yet it seems that only a very small number of people are giving it a try. High Chief, try doing a search here and at Drool Donkey for more information on this topic. If you do give this technique a try, please post your results.

My hampster's nephew is casing today using both acetone and vodka teks. I will keep you posted.

Little boots, Please post exactly what you did, I am curious. I am going to use a 2.5% ethanol (everclear) and 97.5% water solution to wet my verm. and let it sit for 5 days before using.

Sorry for the delay. I had to track that little bastard down. The little shit was eating my cabinets again.

Anyways, he is using a fine verm. bottom layer (1 in thick). Using crumbled PF cakes. Casing with a vodka casing (1/2 in thick) and a acetone casing (1/2 in thick).

He prepared the vodka (80 proof, generic brand) at about 2.5 - 5% (He is not the most accurate hampster). The acetone (finger nail polish remover) casing was at the same concentration.

Both casings are also made with fine verm. Both were prepared 5-6 days ago, were covered, and allowed to sit at 80 deg F.

The bottom layer of verm. and container were sterilized. The top verm. layer (vodka/acetone) were not.

Both are in a perlite humidified terrarium at 90% hum. and 75 deg.

I will keep everyone posted.
