Psilocybe talk and lab tour in Oakland this Friday night * 2

Mycologist Alan Rockefeller will give a lecture on the identification of psilocybin mushrooms.  It will include an overview of all North American species, focusing on the species which occur in the San Francisco Bay area.  The audience will learn important characteristics for accurate identification and how to spot poisonous lookalikes.    Participants are invited to bring legal mushrooms for a hands-on discussion of how to identify mushrooms you encounter.

Alan Rockefeller is a mycologist living in Oakland.  He spends half the year hunting mushrooms in Mexico where he documents a wide variety of fungal species. His experience in the field has focuses on mushroom identification, DNA analysis, microscopy and photography.

In the lab Alan sequences the DNA of mushrooms from all over the world, gaining new insights into existing species, discovering new ones and eliminating duplicates in the taxonomic record.

Time:  Doors open at 8pm, talk starts at 8:30. 

Afterwards we will hang out in Counter Culture Labs to see and talk about some of the citizen science based mycological research happening in the bay area.

Thats really cool Allen! I'll definitely try and make it down there, what an opportunity! Do you think there will be many specimens out for the walk? I just was not sure  with the weather patterns? I am Fairly new to this though!

Hopefully I will catch you down there for at least one of the days. Thanks for sharing your expertise with all of us Allen!

No idea what we will see on the walk.  I haven't hunted there this year yet, and in still in Mexico City right now.

It was pretty cool.    About 100 people showed up, and we hunted mushrooms until it got dark.  Found 4 patches of P. allenii, some rare Leucocoprinus, cool slime molds, death caps, Gymnopilus luteofolius, a couple species of Leucoagaricus, a new species of Amanita in the A. pantherina group.

My wife and I went to the talk at the church thing. We had a good time, but had to leave before the lab part. Thanks Alan!
