A new GA Psilocybe, or maybe Ps. atlantis??(pics)
    #430587 - 10/19/01 03:11 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

I'm soooo excited today, I think found another active psilocybe in the area! Its very close to home, and they've been right under my nose for years now :) They definitely stain blue, the have a somewhat gelatinous pellicle, but its barely removeable. They range anywhere from1"-4" in height, stem is quite skinny, and the base of the stem is covered in fibrillose at the base. Caps are anywhere from 1/4" to 1.5" in diameter, and the caps are striate at the margin, also strongly hygrophanous, fading to a straw yellowy color. Spore print is dark purple. They were found growing on flood plainish type land growing from sandy loamy soil around patches of tall grass and weeds.

My buddy that discovered atlantis says they favor temps in the 80-90s and are a summer species, says they have been done fruiting for a while now, so I don't think this is atlantis. Then again, I've only seen two pictures of atlantis in the wild, they could vary considerably under different conditions and areas.

Specimens are drying now and will be sent out to a lab for ID in the future. I'm also taking prints and will be sending them to various sources to attempt and cultivate them. And after I am absolutely certain of my find, a bioassy is in order in the next few days.

Here some pics from todays pickings.....

The luck follows me I tell you! :) Its just happens, I'm never expecting it :)

Funny you mention weilii, I just took some pics of some backyard weilii no even 2 minutes ago, will post them in a bit. They're nothing spectacular, probably the seasons last flush or so :( But there is always next year, and I have this new species that is fruiting fairly decent now and doesn't seem to mind the cold much at all.

I tell you, this has been the best fungal year of my life :) I found weilii again, subbs for the first time, my first good GA cubie field, horse field cubies, woodchip cubies, all sorts of inactive psilocybes, morels, this new species posted here, subbs in grass clippings, etc... Its just been a crazy wonderful year :) And I loved every minute of it and look forward to many more to come. Man I love being a shroomer :)

Thanks everyone :)

Yes, weilii has been, and can be somewhat easily cultivated indoors. Search the username aaron in the advanced forum for details on indoor weilii cultivation.

Nice find LK!
I find it funny how lookalike the different psilocybe species are.
This is the picture of a mushroom I found in Austria, it?s probably P. bohemica or P. arcana or even something else.

After I read your post about the Chattahooche, I actually went out to it and walked down the bank for like an hour searching for anything.....all I found was pollution.
